I've seen reports recently about those idiots who buy into Phelp's arguments that every soldier who dies is the result of the society having homosexuals, abortionists, prostitutes and so on... (this being the fallicy of the individual vs the collective, which is common in religion but I digress)

Obviously their opinion is protected by freedom of speech, but the manner of expressing it: that is doing so in a way which desturbs the peace is not. So Kansas passed a law banning demonstrations within a certain radius of a funeral. That seems like a reasonable start. It doesn't discriminate against speech, it simply makes it illegal to picket *anything* at a funeral.

But these guys won't stop. They seem to think it's their purpose to cause as much anguish to the grieving families who have lost their husband/father/son/daughter/wife/sister in Iraq or Afghanistan in the most disrespectful and disgusting way.

I've always seen free speech as the best method of opposing hateful or reprehensible speech. But that isn't working with these people because they have no shame about having the community hate them and basically tell them to go F* themselves. They seem to get off on it.

However I think that if another sort of counter-protest was initiated, it might be an unusual yet effective way of firing back and getting this idiots to shut up. I'd appreciate any feedback.

Oh... and I know... I get yelled at for promoting my blog and such, but I'm putting a link here because... you kinda need the pictures and such for full effect...

Michael Moore actually already did something like what you describe. He
got a pink bus full of gays ("The Sodom-mobile") to follow the Phelps clan
around.

People like Phelps thrive on attention and publicity, so maybe we should ignore them. I'm not sure many people take them seriously, anyway. I don't think it's really possible to engage in meaningful debate with raving lunatics whose arguments make no sense to begin with.
