Powerful Message in WTO Protestor's Suicide ?

For me, reading something like this is evidence of how close our own society is begining to decline fast. When the poor and disgruntled start killing themselves to spread a message and become martyrs, then I'm sure you can guess whats next.

another culture of losers who are more inclined to find respect in suicide than doing anything productive with their lives....just closer to home

Cancun, Mexico (CNSNews.com) - A protestor committed suicide here on Wednesday during an anti-globalization rally targeting the WTO's free-trade policies. Fellow protestors hailed him for the act, but a free market activist accused the protesters of exploiting the suicide to support their political agenda.

Lee Kyung-Hae, a South Korean farmer and lawmaker, was participating in a mock funeral for the World Trade Organization's alleged victims outside the conference hall in Cancun when he climbed a security fence, pulled out a knife, and stabbed himself in the chest.

surely this one case is "humorous" in some sense, but Im considering are the other protester-sheep who can "see all the possibilities" of such an act in different manners.

pretty soon suicide bombing will be an "act of free speech"./

If intent is clear
Convey message to the world
Free Speech it would be.

Seems simple concept
Free speech comes in many forms
Not only verbal

It is hard to tell
If you intend poor poem

Yes, I see a message as well - "I'm an absolute moron." Very sad.

It's hard to believe someone could actually stab themself in the chest. My friend once saved a woman who was being stabbed by her husband with a big screwdriver...the guy then turned the screwdriver on himself and stabbed his own abdomen about 15 times (both lived).

This is not the first time Lee attempted suicide over WTO policies. In 1990, he stabbed himself in the stomach at the Geneva headquarters of the WTO...

The WTO policymakers in Cancun cannot ignore the political power of Lee's suicide, according to Mittal.

"This is the naked truth - let the truth be told finally now," she said.
The "truth" is that he probably needed a shrink. Seriously, this is both sad and scary.

A few thoughts,

death is always solemn, even when it comes to the Darwin Awards, joking about death is disrespectful, although sometimes very funny.

On the person who killed themself:
-most likely very depressed or suffering from psychosis
-also outside MI, probably very desperate, think about all the American farmers who have shot themselves over the last thirty years, as a society we have benefitted somewhat from the industrial farm. However many American farmers have felt overwhelmed by the loss of thier lifestyle and livlihood.
-perhaps not as useful to the cause as Thich Naht hahan mentor lighting himself on fire.

On the persons making him a martyr:
-gee ain't that politics
-whats the difference between mourning one death and multiple deaths

on NTW;
-so whats the difference between them trying to make him a martyr and you trying to make something of them making him a martyr, same point diferent angle.
