If a PC has a problem wherein after booting up and starting normal stuff, it very quickly grinds to a halt because it has a bunch of processes starting up and not shutting down, what might be the problem? Anyone know?

This is just a guess....
lots of new software has a crappy habit of running itself in your background from startup wether you like it or not. Maybe you've just accumulated far to many of these.
Have you run "msconfig" from the run command and gone through step by step eliminating processes from your startup you don't need?

Virus or spyware would be a good guess. Try running Spybot, search and destroy, after starting windows in safe mode. Make sure your virus checker is up to date. You did not mention the version of windows. Ctl-Alt-Del will bring up a list of the tasks that are running. You can cancel these tasks if they do not make sense.
