Do you remember in 2006 when there was that massive liquid bomb plot? They arrested 24 people from London and surrounding areas from carrying out attacks which would have been far bigger than 9/11. Just think of all the lovely laws you could rush through congress!

This is a good point. Even if they'd only stopped most of them, allowing one or two to get blown up, they'd have justification for a whole new round of civil liberty violations. But they screwed up and stopped the plot.

Several commentators (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/08/17/flying_toilet_terror_labs/) were sceptical that the binary liquid weapons would have been viable in any case. It seemed to me to be amateur hour, handily stopped by the intelligence community but then used for serious brownie points by the authorities - "look what we did! We aren't a total waste of space after all!".

Perhaps, but if you wanted to justify action against Iran, say, all you would have needed to do was let one work and posit some phony link with the Iranians. But that didn't happen; it was stopped before any of them made it onto planes.

If you're going to have a false flag operation, shouldn't you at least have something bad happen?

It's just like all the other CTs. People mistake governmental (with the emphasis on "mental") incompetence and the subsequent damage-limitation/making of political mileage, for deliberate false-flag. The former happens all the time, the latter - not so much (if at all). The irony is that all the attention given to the CT is less attention given to the cock-ups and cover-ups that the government(s) might actually be committing.
