You've just put your finger on the crux of this whole problem.
Outside of this one example, no one has ever seen what happens when a jumbo airliner traveling at 500 mph broadsides a skyscraper. Just like no one had ever seen anything like what happened at the Pentagon. There is no "normal" way for it to look.
But that doesn't make any difference whatsoever to so many people. Because even though no one has ever seen other examples of anything like what happened here, they still believe that's not what it's "supposed" to look like. That's not what is "supposed" to happen. That's not what it "normally" looks like. That's not what "normally" happens.
