"We were just talking -- I was ranting -- and he wrote about it. That isn't right. We all say stuff we don't want printed," Thomas said.

Helen Thomas does not serve the administration. She is a reporter, and very outspoken against President Bush. Her role vis-a-vis the white house is adversarial.

ETA: wikipedia will tell you a bit about her, though I haven't read it closely enough (or frankly have enough knowledge) to know if it has the details correct.

Furthermore, in which Administration, exactly, does clarsct think Helen Thomas could have served and said that?

You missed the whole point, and the irony too. Oh, the irony!

Helen Thomas is not a member and never has been a member of the White House staff. She is not a government employee of any stripe. She is a member of the White House press corps. That means she is allowed a press pass to White House press briefings. She is a private journalist.

Thomas is complaining about being quoted by a fellow reporter for some "off the record" remarks she made to him. She'll never trust another reporter again! Ha ha ha. I'd be willing to wager that she has screwed at least 1,000 or so persons who've talked to her candidly in her long journalism career.

Just desserts, I say.

I do believe that was RandFan's point, if I may be so bold as to speak for him. I'm sure if I'm wrong, he'll correct me.

No, I didn't. I'm aware of Helen Thomas' position.

My point about clarsct's post is based on a hypothetical that he apparently takes to be true. What if Helen Thomas did 'serve' this adminstration? Does he think that (hypothetically) White House Staff could feel free to slam the vice president in that way? In any of those administrations?
