White House press doyenne Helen Thomas is plenty peeved at her longtime friend Albert Eisele, editor of THE HILL newspaper in Washington, D.C.
[quote]Competence simply isn't a ctiterion for a White House job these days, is it? A "press doyenne" speaks frankly to a friend who happens to be a journalist, and feels so betrayed.

*shakes his head very sadly*
There was a time when people could speak honestly about the Administration they served. We've lost something, folks. We've lost something valuable. Or is it just me? |

ETA: wikipedia will tell you a bit about her, though I haven't read it closely enough (or frankly have enough knowledge) to know if it has the details correct. |

"The day Al Gore is going to run for president, I'll kill myself. All we need is one more liar." "The day Dan Quayle is going to run for president, I'll kill myself. All we need is one more liar." "The day George Bush is going to run for president, I'll kill myself. All we need is one more liar." "The day Walter Mondale is going to run for president, I'll kill myself. All we need is one more liar." "The day Spiro Agnew is going to run for president, I'll kill myself. All we need is one more liar." "The day Hubert Humphrey is going to run for president, I'll kill myself. All we need is one more liar." "The day Lyndon Johnson is going to run for president, I'll kill myself. All we need is one more liar." I have a hard time imagining any of those administrations letting White House Staff get away with slamming a VP in such a fashion to reporters. Could be just me, though. |

Helen Thomas is not a member and never has been a member of the White House staff. She is not a government employee of any stripe. She is a member of the White House press corps. That means she is allowed a press pass to White House press briefings. She is a private journalist. Thomas is complaining about being quoted by a fellow reporter for some "off the record" remarks she made to him. She'll never trust another reporter again! Ha ha ha. I'd be willing to wager that she has screwed at least 1,000 or so persons who've talked to her candidly in her long journalism career. Just desserts, I say. I do believe that was RandFan's point, if I may be so bold as to speak for him. I'm sure if I'm wrong, he'll correct me. AS |

My point about clarsct's post is based on a hypothetical that he apparently takes to be true. What if Helen Thomas did 'serve' this adminstration? Does he think that (hypothetically) White House Staff could feel free to slam the vice president in that way? In any of those administrations? MattJ |

Bah. I took "White House doyenne" to mean she worked FOR the White House.
Sorry. |
