Okay. Idaho. I thought it was Michigan, for some reason.

Here it is:

Greenleaf wants homeowners to arm themselves.

Quote:
A small Canyon County town is considering a city ordinance that would recommend every homeowner have a gun and know how to use it.

A Greenleaf city council member proposed the idea as part of a plan to handle civil emergencies.

It would create citizen response teams and neighborhood watch groups, but would also recommend citizens own a gun and ammunition.

"We aren't choosing to pick a fight. We're choosing to organize and learn how to defend our own homes," said Greenleaf Mayor Brad Holton.

Holton assumes nearly every person living in his town already owns a gun.

"That's just the nature of our community," said Holton.

So he says little would be changed by adopting this ordinance that "recommends every head of household maintain a firearm and ammunition."

"It's requesting. It's not requiring," said Holton.
Ah. Requesting. Not requiring. Oops.

Quote:
The ordinance not only recommends gun ownership. It also recommends training on how to use them.
I'm all for that. If you own a gun, at least have some damned training.

Quote:
“If I was a burglar or if I was wanting to cause harm and I had all these cities to go to, why would I pick a city that is organized and trained? I wouldn't. I'd pick a city who isn't," said Holton.

Guns Used in the Majority of U.S. Homicides

According to the government's most recent survey, a 2004 report from the Department of Justice, almost 450,000 victims of violent crimes that year said that they faced an offender with a firearm. Steve Inskeep reports on statistics about gun-related crimes.

Scottish Answer to Crime: Knife Control

In an effort to reduce the stabbings and slashings that stem from the country's "booze and blade" culture, Scotland is cracking down on the sale of swords, machetes, meat cleavers and other knifes. Knife violence accounts for almost half of the homicides in Scotland each year.

I think what you've shown here is what happens after firearms are legislated away.

As to why a burgler might pick such a town, I can think of one good reason. Provided that they are sufficiently accomplished to only burgle houses when the owners are away, they could be guaranteed finding guns inside. Guns are one of the things burglers most like to steal.

Or were you perhaps thinking of Kennesaw, Georgia.

Not if the firearm is properly in the owner's waistband or purse.

Then the burglar had better be sure they're not still there when the owner comes home.

I can see how having everyone in a small town armed might cut down on violent crime. Maybe.

Dr. Kitten's post brought a funny image in my head of a purse snatcher having everyone in view whipping out a gun and drawing a bead on him.

Having everyone in an inner city armed would be a completely different dynamic, though, wouldn't it? That brings some not so funny images into my head.
