Frank Rich: Decade of bamboozlement

Interesting op-ed from yesterday's NYT,
Tiger Woods, Person of the Year

Quote:
If there’s been a consistent narrative to this year and every other in this decade, it’s that most of us, Bernanke included, have been so easily bamboozled. The men who played us for suckers, whether at Citigroup or Fannie Mae, at the White House or Ted Haggard’s megachurch, are the real movers and shakers of this century’s history so far. That’s why the obvious person of the year is Tiger Woods. His sham beatific image, questioned by almost no one until it collapsed, is nothing if not the farcical reductio ad absurdum of the decade’s flimflams, from the cancerous (the subprime mortgage) to the inane (balloon boy).

Wow. A "scathing indictment of our times" is a cliche that comes to mind. But it sure rang true with me.

Rich is one of my favorite columnists. He's usually got an insightful view of the politics of our time.

Yes, he often offers good stuff.

As cons go, Woods’s fraudulent image as an immaculate exemplar of superhuman steeliness is benign.
The steeliness was what those ladies liked, was it not? Heard a rumor last week: when Tiger began hanging out with M Jordan and Charles Barkley, his wandering ways took off. Not sure if there is any substance to this rumor, but it has a small ring of truth.

His fall will damage his family, closest friends, Accenture and the golf industry much more than the rest of us.
But he can absorb the damage. He's got some reserve. A lot of people, including two friends of mine, could not absorb the damage when Enron, and MCI/Worldcom, went down in flaming bogusness.
