In my humble opinion and relying on media generated information I'd say Zimmermann while not being murderer at heart was nontheless responsible for what happened. He was asked to stay in the car but he took it upon himself to follow a scared kid into an alley. The kid attacked him and he shot the kid.

Zimmermann may never be punished legally for what happened but he does have to live with the fact he killed someone and it could have been avoided.

The father foolishly brought a stick to a gunfight and was killed by the black man in self-defense but he still got six years in prison for a weapons violation. It's his own fault that he ended up dead.
