It says there are few openly gay news anchors on TV.

In Australia, I can think of two. Peter Hitchener and Anton Enus. There would be more. It's disproportionate.

The BBC has at least one gay newsreader.

And this is a big deal because...?

Honestly who this guys wants to sleep with isn't news and shouldn't be treated as such because when you do you are telling people that it is unusual and so needs a spotlight on it.

The first article is even worse, if the guy is gay, so what, why does he have to come out and tell the world? Sexual orientation should be a private thing to the people involved, if they want to tell friends and family (instead of letting them figure it out the usual way of noticing what sex their partner is) or even readers of their books/blogs/etc then great, but don't demand they have tell the whole world, or spread it over the internet as news. No one would bother spreading the news and demanding people came out as straight, so give these guys the same respect.

It's news when they're hot. Who attractive famous people sleep with is of general interest. If Justin Timberlake came out as gay? That's exciting news. If Jake, the 50-something overweight neckbearded manager at the McDonald's near me came out? Who cares? Unless of course he's getting it on with Justin Timberlake.

I hope you can now understand why gay marriage has to fought against! He's been reporting on the issue and despite practising safe-reporting he's still caught Teh Gay, it won't be long until we've all caught Teh Gay!

ETA: I've just been looking at my scatter cushions and thinking they don't quite go with the new rug, do you think I could have caught Teh Gay?

It depends. When you bought them, were you distracted by Justin Timberlake flirting with you?

Personally, I've taken to watching Dancing with the Stars, and looking at the girl's FEET to see if they're doing it right.

I'm l33t teh gay!

It just isn't important, which is why it needn't be hidden in the first place so that anybody has to "come out".

I think it's okay to report it as news because it shows it should be normal and relatively unimportant but apparently still isn't.

It seems that it is more of a "thing" in the US than it is here. I can see why a public figure might stand up and announce it after keeping it quiet and that might help somebody who is suffering because they feel that they have to keep this "terrible secret", although I think it is a shame that they have to. It should be nothing more than any other detail about a person. Shrug.

But it's the reporting of it that is making it seem to be unusual. We all know that the whole idea of the news is to report to us what is happening that isn't normal everyday life, so if the news reports on someone "coming out" it's saying that this is something unsual.

We have a news anchor here that first married her (male) co-anchor at the time and then after they divorced, she subsequently had a civil union with her then girl-friend (now civil partner). The full scale of the reporting was the first engagement and wedding, that they were getting divorced, and then the engagement and civil union. There was no big announcement that she'd come out in between, and there shouldn't have been one either, it's no one's business but hers.
