According to a search-warrant affidavit drafted by New Mexico State Police Agent Kraig Bobnock, investigators were told by a family member "that there is a marijuana grow somewhere inside the residence." The three bodies were found stabbed and bludgeoned to death with a pickax — a hand tool with a metal head, one side flat, another pointed.

In June, a person used a pickaxe to kill a mother, father and their special needs son at their El Rancho home.

New Mexico State Police have been tight lipped about the investigation – unable to even identify a suspect – and that has frustrated and scared the victim’s family.

“Who ever did this is a monster,” Angela Ortiz-Spinks said. “What kind of person would do that to a person who can't defend themselves?”

Cherie Ortiz-Rios found her mother Dixie, father Lloyd and brother Steven Ortiz.

She was accused of shooting the victims, although autopsy reports showed the family died from a blunt force to the head.

She believes police might have botched the case because they never searched for clues at her home even though she was treated as a suspect.

It’s perhaps the ultimate sign of frustration with rationality.

But Angela Ortiz-Spinks said when she asked the psychic Sylvia Browne who killed her father, mother and adopted brother with a pickaxe in El Rancho last summer, Browne immediately offered a name.

State Police, after 11 months of investigating the murders of Lloyd, Dixie and Steven Ortiz, have failed to do the same — for the family or the media.

In a series of interviews since March, Ortiz-Spinks and her sister, Cherie Ortiz-Rios, both of whom have been questioned and, so far, cleared as possible suspects in the murders, expressed mounting impatience with the lack of progress in the State Police investigation. Ortiz-Spinks said she’s been in weekly contact with the agents overseeing the case, but the conversations have become more and more one-sided — lots of questions and too few answers.

What We Know

Ortiz-Rios and her husband first reported the murders to police around 7 p.m. June 19, Father’s Day, telling dispatchers it appeared the three victims had been shot in the head, according to a State Police report by lead case agent Bryan Waller.

Immediately, reports leave out information in the sequence of events. For instance, a report by crime scene investigator Joe Schiel states: “While clearing the residence, Officer (Bert) Lopez observed a ...” The next four lines are redacted.

There are no details about what Sylvia Browne said, but what is clear is Browne is still giving readings and names regarding criminal cases. To date, in nearly a year there have been no arrests for this triple murder.

An interesting thought. If I should ever murder someone (perish the thought), I would immediately call upon Montel's Wicked Witch to catch the killer and thus accomplish two things:

1. That I did not do it, else why would I expose myself to being uncovered, and
2. Guaranteeing that I would never be uncovered by the WW. Unless, of course, I was foolish enough to commit the crime near water.

Wasn't there a case where SB was consulted by the entire family, which included the fellow who was evenutally charged with (and perhaps convicted of) the murder? I'm sure I remember reading about it somewhere, but I can't be bothered to look it up right now.

You're probably thinking of the Lynda McClelland case. She had been missing and Browne said that she was still alive and living in Orlando. In reality, she was murdered by her own son-in-law on the day she disappeared.

Twelve months and still no answers.

One year ago, three people were found brutally slain in their home in the rural community of El Rancho -- population 1,200 -- located just outside Pojoaque, 20 minutes north of Santa Fe.

She said when officers arrived at her parents' house on Father's Day, one agent approached her and "asked me what I did with the gun used to kill my mom, my dad and my brother." Jesse Rios was asked the same thing, he said.

To make matters worse, Angela Spinks contacted the psychic and author Sylvia Browne, who was visiting Albuquerque months after the homicides. Spinks asked Browne who had killed her parents and brother. In front of a large crowd that included Pojoaque and El Rancho residents, Browne said it was Rios.

State police Agent Kraig Bobnock told the family to disregard Browne's answer because the show was rigged and that it was a stunt.

"I do know the police have asked a lot of questions about my sister and Jesse because they've done that to me, they've asked me a lot of questions about them," Spinks said. "I do think a lot of the community is looking at them in a negative way right now."

For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone calls this crazy woman to come and help them. After the Shawn Hornbeck debacle, she just keeps sinking lower and lower. I don't wish for death but maybe she could suddenly lose the power to speak. Or her fingernails would fall off. Or she goes bald and can't wear wigs. Anything to keep her from defrauding people.
