Volunteers

So is this a thing of the past? If not I'm offering myself for whatever is needed of me. (TAM stuff!)

The last TAM was largely staffed by Rent-a-Help and there was not much for volunteers as in the past. But send a PM to SkepticScott, who was the volunteer coordinator at previous TAMs.

The JREF is hiring the same event coordinators again, so we will not have volunteers doing those tasks. Paid staff does everything we used to do. A little piece of TAM history is over.

( I'm sorry for the delay, I've had a pinched nerve which has cut back on my recreational typing.)

We can still have the volunteer lunch though, and pretend, right?

I am sure that the organizers had good and reasonable reasons for doing this, but it is a shame. Some of the most fulfilling time I have had at TAM has been volunteering, and it gave the volunteers a connection to TAM that others might not have. Well, I guess you can't stop progress.

I'm sorry everyone, volunteering was special, fun, and a nice way to meet other attendees. Yes, Xinit, we can still get together for lunch but Randy and D.J. won't be there.

Volunteering was special for me, at TAM 1 I offered to help an overworked Linda by standing at the far end of the book table and directing people to her for payment. After Hal's "I want you to listen carefully to what I'm going to tell you" speech it was a convenient place to hide and think while I listened to the news reports.

Too bad about the news on volunteers, even though I only did it for one year at TAM 9, when our duties were already limited. I was ready to volunteer again.

Scott, you did a great job! Hope your pinched nerve is quickly getting better. Looking forward to seeing you next month.

ETA: TAM9 volunteers' lunch.

Go ahead, AdMan, rub it in that my flight made me 15 minutes late to lunch and missed the picture! grumble, grumble, grumble...

Oops, too bad you missed it!

I had actually gone out earlier to pick up Mac King tickets, and, believing I had lots of time and not thinking of distances, I took the hotel shuttle to the strip and walked, then realizing I was late I rushed to take a (very slow) cab back. I actually arrived in the restaurant just in time to get pulled into the picture. I didn't really realize there was a "last supper" motif until i saw it.

The TAMbassadors Idea seems like a good way to volunteer, although it's focused on a particular issue. http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=234795 Don't know where it stands as far as official JREF planning goes, though. Do you have any idea, Scott? Sorry to hear about your pinched nerve, by the way. Hope that doesn't interfere with your TAM attendance. They've got some stuff in the Del Mar that helps the pain go away, or so I'm told.

Me too! Didn't we have dinner together at the tale end it? I seem to recall doing that.

And yeah. Aside from being a way to give something back to the Jref for the grants, volunteering was a great way to meet people and to contribute in some way. I'm signed up to be a TAMbassador this year.

I hope the Tambassador thing actually happens. It would be CrazyLegsMurphy's enduring contribution to Jref
