If so, that's a first. I did not think Jack Chick was even capable of realizing anything he draws is ridiculous or self-defeating.

There are a number of reasons, but I think that the most fundamental underlying reason is that it is evil atheist scientists who are making the claims.

Once you have that, the rest is easy. Get some ignorant fool to make claims such as, "God controls our world, to claim that we can destroy it is to claim that we are more powerful than God", or "God gave us dominion over the Earth, now these atheists are trying to take our god-given rights away from us!", or any other such nonsense.

Once that person makes such a claim, of course scientists respond by disagreeing. And the moment that they disagree, then it becomes an "atheist vs. religion" thing...and of course, Christians cannot possibly side with the atheists, against their fellow believers.

Doesn't matter whether their arguments are rational, or have any merit whatsoever; what matters is that it is Christian leaders vs. atheist authorities, and they simply will never back the atheists. And the more scientists seek to prove they're correct, the more it is seen simply as an attack on their religious leaders.

The lovely, Jesus-fearing man you elected to congress tells you global warming is a hoax. The scientist tells you it's real. The same scientist also rejects creationism, so you know he's a liar. The choice is easy.

I know there's plenty to laugh at in Jack Chick, but the one aspect that always astounds me about this kind of viewpoint is the image they seem to have of non believers. So often, his non believers have the worldview they do not because they have thought it out and come to a conclusion, but rather because they've simply never heard of christianity.

This is a classic. Seriously, the kid in this comic has never heard of souls. "Soul? What's a soul? Am I supposed to have one?" Nor does he have any concept of what hell is. He asks if Jesus is "some religious guy, like Buddha, Allah, or the Pope?"

And of course the response to this revelation is always "Oh, wow, you mean I just have to pray to Jesus and I'll be saved?! That's amazing!"

The idea that you could know this story, in detail, and just not buy it seems to be something their mindset just can't grasp.

Yes, I've thought that for years. As a youngster, I used to wonder whether the average American, who of course doesn't do religious studies in school, is genuinely that ignorant about Christianity and its tenets. Nowadays, I just think it's Chick's biases coming through. He's so obsessed with his religion that he simply can't grasp the fact that people might have heard of it, studied it and even experienced it without turning into a full-on fundie.

It's not just J.C. that believes this. I once had a Jehovah's Witness start relating a practiced Jesus narrative to me. I stopped her mid-sentence by saying, "I am familiar with the legend." She was shocked that I referred to it as a legend and astonished that I knew of it and still didn't believe it. Her cognitive dissonance was delicious.

There's a wonderful interview Chris Hitchens did once with Todd Friel where Friel was trying a "gotcha" schtick whereby he played a "hypotheticals" game... he asked a series of questions along the lines of "What if god truly exists, don't you think he would have rights on your life?" and "What if there is a judgment day and god asks you to give an account of yourself... how do you think you would do?"

Over and over Hitchens gave the kinds of answers you might imagine... and Friel just could not comprehend it. Over and over he got answers other than the ones he obviously wanted, and over and over he just kept saying "But it's a hypothetical... assuming god does exist..." Todd Friel just could not grasp that Hitchens could accept his hypothetical and yet still come to different conclusions. It's a level of cognitive dissonance that is really quite stunning to see.

And it's on youtube

Bloody hell what a bunch of pre-canned schlock from Friel. Do they seriously think that no one on the planet has heard this drivel before? Good recording though. Should make a nice reference for future skeptics.

I don't think Chick honestly cares whether people buy the story; all that matters is that church groups keep buying his tracts.

Spectacular:

F: Even though he keeps you alive, he causes you to breathe, he provides you food and everything that is good he doesn't have any rights to tell you what to do? Nothing?

H: Does that mean that people who are sick and poor and hungry are excused this obligation of thanking someone brokenly for owning them?

F: That's not part of the gameshow.

1. It's pretty funny when Jack Chick (or ghost writer) characterizes a racist remark of someone else's as "very rude".

2. I am powerfully tempted to include a note "Note the crescent moon" on every picture ever, provided there are no crescent moons pictured.

It makes perfect sense if one subscribes to the divine command theory of morality. If one accepts what is "right" is specifically what god says is right, then god could say that one must to do any atrocity of any kind, and that person is morally obligated to do it.

God can commit all the atrocities he wants because if his will is the entire source of right and wrong, atrocities can be a good thing.

Oh, no, not at all. From the gospel of John:

Quote:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
And later context makes clear that the Word they're talking about is Jesus.

Now, this is a concept that's pretty much limited to John; John is waaaaaay different from the other ("synoptic") gospels. But it's by no means a Catholic-only thing; in fact, the fundies sometimes criticize Catholics for moving Jesus too far from God. For examples, see other Chick tracts.
