OMG! What has YouTube done?
Until recently, when I watched a YouTube video, a large file (eg 500Kb or so) called ''videoplayback'' was left in my temporary Internet files. But not now. After watching a movie, I can find no trace of a big file in that folder, only a lot of tiny ''videoplayback'' files. There are maybe 15 or 20 of these small files, all usually the same size, 2400Kkb or 1740Kb.
Yet with other streaming video sites, if I watch a movie I can still see a large file left behind in temporary Internet files. So it's only a YouTube thing. Previously, if I wanted to look at a video a second time I was able to do so by renaming the big file *.flv but if I want to re-watch a YouTube vid now I have to view it online again, which eats into my broadband allocation. Is YouTube doing something different with its files or could this be a problem I've somehow created on my computer? |

Well, for me, Youtube videos only buffer ~40 seconds at a time and with my slower internet connection it is a pain to watch them. So now I find myself downloading them (DownloadHelper addon for Firefox) instead.
That could be what's happening with you, it is only the first minute or so that downloads, then the next and so on. |

That does seem to be a new thing - it used to be that if you started a Youtube video, then paused it, it would buffer the entire thing. Now it only buffers the next 40" or so.

It isn't just YouTube. A lot of sites no longer leave Temp files from streamed materials.
Too many people were just going into Temp and doing the "right-click and save" on files they wanted, regardless of copyright. |
