Australian Girl Guides ditch allegiance to God and the Queen

Quote:
Promising to serve God and the Queen and pledging obedience have been ruled old-fashioned and out of step with modern Australian life by junior and senior guides.

Australia's 28,000 guides will now vow to serve community and country and "live with courage and strength".

The change to the Guiding Promise and Guide Law begins in units across the country from today.

There's a poll asking if they've done the right thing, which seems to be being bombarded by bleevers.

You know what to do!

It's like some people think no longer requiring young girls to make religious and political pledges to participate in something is the same as making them make pledges against a religion or political system.

I liked that quote too, and thought pretty much the same thing

Enh. "Going on camps" and "getting some badges" sure is fun, and who doesn't like fun?

But I'm not sure "liking fun" is really all that sensible or grown-up.

I guess if the point of GG is to have fun, then... mission accomplished. Kudos to you for having fun. But having sense or showing maturity? Not so much.

Grown-ups aren't supposed to like fun? I guess I should just give up on life now.

Of course grown-ups are supposed to like fun. Who isn't?

But liking fun isn't something that distinguishes oneself as a grown-up.

I mean, seriously? When was the last time someone told you, "you like fun? How grown-up of you!"

It's probably worth pointing out that you're the person who brought up the word "fun". You've decided that that's the sole motivation of this girl without any evidence at all that it is.

Scouts over here didn't start letting girls join until 1971, but in practice in most areas the Scouts are boys only (or were when I was that age). Normally boys join the Scouts and girls join the Guides. Pretty much the same thing with different uniforms.

My sister and I were joey scouts and then and cub scouts and there were lots of boys and girls, and the ones we went to and saw were mostly run by women.

And I looked at the cub scout promise, and they've got two to choose from:
Quote:
On my honour
I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to my God, and
To Australia
To help other people, and
To live by the Cub Scout Law

or

On my honour
I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to my God, and
To the Queen of Australia
To help other people, and
To live by the Cub Scout Law
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cub_Scouts_%28Australia%29

One more Republican, but both religious.

Storm in a tea cup. Much has changed since the days of Baden Powell and although I don't think it was really necessary to change the pledge, I can't imagine that there is anything wrong with them doing so.

The other way around. Girl Scouts are the American version of Girl Guides, which started a couple of years earlier. It's a little more confused now, as Scout organisations in many countries now allow girls as well as boys to join.
