Understood. Those were all features that the nexus has that are better than the kindle fire.

I, for one, like the competition. I also am beginning to regret buying an Ainol Aurora last month. But alas, waiting for the perfect technology product will just mean you'll never get anything. I think I can justify the next generation of Fire when it comes out.
Who wouldn't regret an anal aurora

But yes, at some point you have to just jump in, or be left forever waiting for the next best thing.

IDK how much better the next fire will be. I think they may just drop the current price to 149 and offer a 10" @ 199. Amazon has done a better job than google , IMHO, emulating apple and downplaying specs and emphasizing price and use.

Also:
http://allthingsd.com/20120627/exclu...p-the-nexus-7/

One way the companies managed that is through razor-thin margins. Google is selling the device through its Google Play store, essentially at cost, and also absorbing the marketing costs associated with the device.

Also your link doesn't exactly sound like a definite "No you wouldn't".

In fact, it reads to me like a very likely "Yes I would if I try hard enough".

Review: Google's Nexus 7 is the budget tablet to beat

It's amazing how many times the word iPad is used in this review.

Also, no adobe flash.

In fact, from 4.1 -> , it appears flash will be officially unsupported.
http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/29/31...-not-supported

But at least the Nexus 7 is less expensive and a smaller form factor ... for now...

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-0...ipad-mini.html
Apple Inc. (AAPL) plans to debut a smaller, cheaper iPad by year-end, two people with knowledge of the plans said, to help maintain dominance of the tablet market as Google Inc. (GOOG) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) prepare competing handheld devices.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...googlenews_wsj
Apple Inc.'s AAPL +1.03% component suppliers in Asia are preparing for mass production in September of a tablet computer with a smaller screen than the iPad, people familiar with the situation said, suggesting a launch for the device is near.

ETA: Samsung does make smaller tablets so never mind.

The most blatant copying that Apple has done is the "Notification Center". I think this is a much more blatant copy than anything that Google/Android manufacturers have done. The pull down notifications have been in Android since the beginning, if I am not mistaken. And I believe there is a patent pending. I hope Google sues the crap out of Apple and wins.

Yes, both Samsung and Google (Asus) have beat Apple to the small tablet market. I don't consider the Kindle to be a real tablet since it's too specialized.

Considering that the screen shot from the Galaxy S is from the app drawer (which the iPhone doesn't even have) rather than the home screen I think so.

Apparently they are almost there (or there already depending on what your needs are).

From one of the comments at Cuddles' link:

Quote:
Check out the nexus 7 formus on XDA. There are people with root and they have OTG usb storage working. Files can be written and read from the external USB storage. Only issue at the moment is that mount points or something is wrong so direct playback of media (videos) from the external storage is not working. expect that to be fixed soon.

Ever seen an older tablet from before Apple decided they'd invented the idea? Fixed batteries and storage in a tablet has been the norm for quite a while. Of course, it was less of an issue when "storage" meant "hard drive". My Archos has 160GB so it really doesn't need expandable memory. That only becomes an issue when people insist on making a device specifically designed to play media without enough space to actually store any media on it.

As for Flash, that's nothing to with Apple, it's just on its way out and being replaced by newer software. Apple refused to have anything to do with it even when it absolutely dominated the internet and therefore locked their uses out of an awful lot of content. Other companies phasing it out in favour of a replacement just isn't the same thing.

It's particularly interesting given that Steve Jobs explicitly said that 10 inches was the absolute minimum tablet size possible, and that Apple wouldn't make anything smaller. Yet here they are making a smaller tablet, with no bigger tablets in sight.

You seem to be the only one in this thread claiming Apple invented the idea...

Who makes a device without enough space to actually store media on it ?

I disagree. Flash being on its way has much to do with apple not supporting it.

Other companies are phasing it out because Adobe is no longer supporting mobile flash. Not because other companies all got together and decided to move to HTML5

Where did he say what I bolded ? At any rate, Jobs is no longer controlling the direction of the company in the same way he was when he talked about tablet size a few years ago...

I have a 10.1" Acer tablet, that I find invaluable, though a bit heavy for on the go use. I am very tempted by the nexus 7, just trying to justify it to myself. The stuff people have said here as marking it down are really petty, no back camera? Well, have a phone for that. No 3g/4g, well my android phone happily acts as a wireless access point. No SD / full size USB slot, that will be a minor irritation as I like to carry a lot of music on me, but I can happily stream from my home network, or a myriad of other sources, anyway, on the move, have my phone.

Updated** rumors:

http://www.technolog.msnbc.msn.com/t...olidays-868362

http://www.macotakara.jp/blog/index.php?ID=17085

It will be called the iPad Mini

It will be the same height as the Nexus 7 (7.81 inches) and either a bit wider or a bit less wide than the Nexus 7 (conflicting reports on width).

It will be very thin.

Both it and a new iPhone model will be out for the holidays.

The consensus at the macrumors forums is that the rumors are false:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1400057

Though, personally, I would be more 50/50.

Maybe ?

I think the 'legacy' of Jobs may actually have some sway on decisions. WWJD ?

Then again, maybe not ... idk, so I decided to err on the side of caution.

I ordered mine yesterday. I've been waiting for this type of tablet for a while now. I came close to pulling the trigger on a Kindle Fire, and I'm really glad I didn't now.

When my aging bulky laptop needed replacing I thought I could get away with switching to an iPad, but after a week with the iPad I actually returned it. Although there were things I really liked about the iPad, it just wasn't going to adequately replace the functionality of a laptop. I also couldn't justify the five hundred bucks I spent on it just to use it as a couch browser and to play silly time waster games.

But I can totally justify two hundred bucks. I think the Nexus 7 is primarily going to serve as my eReader and couch browser.

Good for you.

I ordered on the 29th June but haven't had a shipping confirmation or change to my bank card, Google Wallet etc. In fact, not a word from the big G.

It's not the end of the world but it seems odd that they'd make the people who bit their hand off wait the longest.

Mrs Worm got hers on Friday (ordered from eBuyer, who apparently have been told off for shipping early)

Very cute, but not a big enough screen for me having got used to the iPad.

Very slick interface - fast and smooth. Will be interested to see how it lasts in the long term.

Yeah, I saw some tweets by eBuyer customers who ordered on Thursday and got them on Friday.
Gits. (Mrs Worm excepted, of course.)

They weren't meant to release them and apparently they are now telling customers August 3rd.

I think that's idea, that it's not a direct competitor.
For some the iPad is the perfect size but for others it's a ball-ache.
The Nexus7 will appeal to those who require a tablet that is more portable and easier to hold.

Of course, some folks will have both, using whatever suits the task at the time.

I think the Nexus7 has effectively killed the idea of a UK Fire release.

Wow I didn't know anyone still remembered those!

I had a rocket , then the REB-1100. You must know the fun of telling people you've been reading on an LCD touchscreen ereader since the 90's haha. My first REB had a whopping 8mb of storage!

The last year or so I've switched to my phone for reading but I've always missed the larger screen and the N7 is the ereader I've been holding out for.

I've seen that - it does seem as if some folks aren't exactly the brightest bulb in the house!

Still got one up in the attic, and it still works.

Mrs. Timbo took possession of ours. Unfortunately, I'm 400 miles away.

I'm getting rather pee'd off now, I've sent them two enquiries, a day apart and not even had a form response, that's just terrible customer service.

ETA: Oh and I still hate you all.

Have you checked your spam folder?

Have you tried unplugging your computer, waiting 10 seconds, and plugging it in again?
