Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said, and I quote:

"You have to understand, he had already shot and killed a deputy, he had already shot and killed a K-9 and he shot and injured another deputy. Quite frankly, we weren't taking any chances.... I suspect the only reason 110 rounds was all that was fired was that's all the ammunition they had. We were not going to take any chance of him shooting back."

(Side track slightly) The guy Angilo Freeland was stopped for speeding, he opened his door, ran, cops pursued, and he shot and killed one deputy, his dog Diogi, and injured another. The police found him in the woods, and he apparently reached for his gun, so....

(Sorry, off topic)

He did everything right, or as right as you can do it in a situation like that. Maybe that last shot out the door wasn't the best idea, but it sounds like it went OK for everyone except the two douchebags.
Maybe there is an alley outside that door with no bystanders. Maybe not. I think that guy is awesome so I'll say ya, there was an empty alley out that door

I don't necessarily get excited watching people shoot each other, but in this case, and with the amount of violent crime in this country, I was cheering for him. Save the gun control noise for another thread (not speaking to anyone inparticular). We have guns, a few were used, bad guys lost.

In Florida, or even in Illinois, the only state where there is no legal provision for the citizens to carry a weapon to defend themselves against an attack like that.
Ummmm, that seems to be contradictory to the George Zimmerman case and Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law.

I think he did the right thing by opening up on them without warning. It triggered their "run for your life" reflex and they ran for it. Nowhere does it say if the offenders returned fire. Probably too busy wondering what the hell went wrong, and what's this warm wet feeling I have in the back of my britches?

Despite the hype in this thread, it seemed a reasonable, measured response. I'll have to look at the video a few more times, but the shooter seemed to do an adequate job of keeping his aimpoint on line with the target and off any noncombatants.

Yes, it could have gone down worse. However, the score in this case is Bad Guys 0, Society 2.

If there was NO GUN with the robbers, then I wouldn't be supporting the shooter as much. If the robbers walked in with two baseball bats and the old guy shot them, I'd justify that ONLY if they had struck patrons. I'd have MOST LIKELY put a shot in the trash can to let the idiots know that first off, I was armed, and second off, willing to shoot. Walking in with a drawn gun, however, and a "Free Meat If You Can Get Them" sign appeared over their heads.

Beanbag

ETA: I watched it again, and the old guy's muzzle discipline is damned near perfect. I didn't see him point at ANYONE except the two idiots.
Never, ever waste a shot. You may need to place that last one in the bad guy before he can do unto you.

Oh... the Florida shooting. I don't doubt that happened. I didn't mean to imply it didn't. That quote just pops to my mind whenever somebody mentions "pity" or "out of bullets".

I apologize for the derail.

It's cool. I didn't realize it was a link....

It is contradictory. Very much so. Florida is actually quite open with their gun laws.

It seems the two scamps did not plan their escapade very well; but now they'll have time to hone their skills coached by like-minded imps. Probably be out in no time.

Ah, feckless youth!

That "the only state where there is no-" is referring to Illinois in his sentence, not Florida.

What? The bastard shot a K9 dog? I'm getting mad already. Can I take the cops some more ammo? Where's the nearest Walmart?
