Power4Home Scam: A lesson in search engine optimization

How to build your own solar and wind powered energy plant for under $200, for $49.97!

Really?

I was perusing Glenn Beck's theblaze.com (don't ask), and saw a "Breaking News" article, which was actually an ad for Power4Home (with no indication it was an advertisement). So, what the heck, I followed it.

It was a flash presentation (slideshow) of over 30 minutes. If you have the time, it is quite the lesson in how many emotional strings an ad can try to pluck to sell you something (my favorite is the little girl running up to her daddy with blue lips and her teddy bear in her arms, telling daddy she is sooo cold....). Also many pokes at the evil government corporations ripping you off.

I listened to the end, because that was where the price was (not anywhere else as far as I could tell). Also amusingly, I left the page on a browser tab when it was done, and in about 10 minutes, it started with "Still there?", and began a different sales spiel anew.

But the reason I am actually posting, is I then did a few Google searches on the company. I saw many sites regarding the "Power4home Scam". But, they were all about someone wondering if it was a scam, looking into it, and deciding it was legit. And then posting a link to where you can buy it.

Apparently the people selling this thing have done a superb job of search-engine seeding and optimization. It actually took some work to find the BBB and other scam reports. I think this is a good example of how even the cautious consumer (of products, or of information) can be fairly easily fooled unless they are more and more diligent in their research, and can find information sources, or at least information discussion forums, they can respect.

It resembles the web sites run by several major psychic detectives --- or the multi-million dollar marketing firms hired by those psychic detectives to make them look great.

So far, I've found that they don't actually sell you parts.

They sell you an instruction guide on how to build a solar panel for under $200. Something you could just google for free.

Interesting. I've never gone looking for the referenced links to those, but I can't say I'm surprised.

Yeah, it seems to be some (rather generic) body of instructions, but of the complaints I could find, they made your point, as well as saying the ads were misleading as to what you got (for example, the ad shows how someone built their own power plant and changed an almost $190 utility bill to zero. But, the instructions apparently do not allow this scale of power plant for the "less than $200 in costs" claim).

Pffft. Like I will need this once my perpetual motion machine gets here, and the pyramid that sharpens my blades and charges batteries because it is pyramid shaped.

Nasty. They have bought some interesting domain names: power4homescam.info, power4homescam.net and power4homereview.org, for instance.

The Better Business Bureau has an alert for Power4home:

"According to information in BBB files, Power4Home is not a BBB Accredited Business. The company has not responded to the BBB's requests to remove the BBB Logo from websites. In addition, mail sent to the mailing address has been returned. The BBB has been unable to locate a physical address for the company."

Is there anyone to whom this doesn't scream "SCAM" to instantly?

Sounds like someone farming the net for ideas/plans they can sell as their own. Plenty of places you can find the info for yourself, often for free.
To see what actually can be done, see this clip from TED.

Very typical MLM tactic. I posted something like this in one of the MLM threads.

I believe it is still also a type of search engine optimization, in that creating these other articles, and then including backlinks to Power4Home, increases that website's ranking and visibility in search engine results.

Funny that all the advertisers listed in their "as seen on" are all conservative outlets (Fox, Glenn Beck, The Blaze, The Bob Livingston Letter & Town Hall). I wonder why that is?

But ... anything other than coal or oil is part of the evil liberal AGW agenda to destroy society. Why would GB allow that to be advertised on his site?

The sad thing is course that decent solar pannels can be a good return for a modest investment. As with so many other things in life, the hucksters prey on the unwary and tarnish good ideas.

Ooooh. It's been a long time since I heard about those. I still can't believe anyone took that seriously. They were also supposed to preserve food.

But at least that was cheap woo, with practitioners building their own pyramids from cardboard and sticky-tape.

I saw an ad for a home electricity creating device today. I'm pretty sure it was on the USA Today website's political pages. Power companies hate it, it told me.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if I didn't get there from Facebook. Normally I am running an ad blocker on my browser so I don't even know what ads are there.

The page I landed on had the "as seen on" graphic and it included the publications I mentioned.

Well, he found the ad on the blaze, so they would obviously run the "as seen on" from sites that cater to blaze readership. If they found the ad on "organic foods for u" dot com or whatever, they'd include "as seen on" Montel Williams or something.

Well, that's why they don't work. To truly harness the Power of Pyramids, you must purchase Genuine Gold Plated Pyramid Parts (tm) from PyramidPower.com.

Only 19.95 each plus shipping and handling.

This is the same type of scam as others, such as:

-3 Body Building Secrets
-3 Questions to Seduce a Girl
-1 Secret to getting a bigger penis they don't want you to know.

I have no idea if those are the exact titles, but they follow the same format:

-Long flash movie that takes 30 minutes to get to the point
-Usually a personal story making it look like they put it together themselves and made it big.
-The "point" never actually comes, by the way. If it says it'll tell you the secret to something, the end of the video will lead you to a book for a price. (Also, the book doesn't tell you anything either.)

Searching for these products or specific names, (sometimes the name of "the guy" who put together the video) will yield results on Google in which the person or people on the site will tell you that they thought it was a scam as well, and "investigated" and came to the conclusion that it's NOT a scam, and that you should chip in some money and read the book.

I have to wonder... is this all the same company or same person doing this? Seems like something bigger at work.

That's very common with these type of scams. The articles and links are usually posted by affiliate marketers.

If you believe the US government (and who would do that??), then there's this analysis of all those schemes.

http://www.nist.gov/pml/div684/power_121509.cfm

If you don't believe the government, you could go to:

http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/powerfactor.html

If you don't like that one, what the heck, it's only $29, right?
