Who doesn't love the guy?

He didn't want his kin subservient to man... So is anti slavery.
He wants to disrupt gods plans for the end of days; a plan that involves war in the middle east, suffering, death and forced conversion.
He apparently supports sexual liberation, a range of religions, homosexual rights, equal marriage, is pro choice, pro stem cell research, pro GM...
He is a force of justice, helping st Paul filter out those evil types to be segregated from heaven. Where would you rather those guys went in the after life?

In short a politically progressive liberal who is the governor of a very right wing prison.

Why the bad press?

It's interesting that in popular culture, the Prince of Darkness seems to be undergoing a transformation into an increasingly sympathetic character. In movies he's often portrayed as having the vital role of keeping the balance between good and evil, as well as having the responsibility of punishing the wicked.

I mean, who doesn't want Hitler to be punished?

It's actually going back to his roots. Satan originally referred, as I understand it, to any opposition to God--even opposition God himself appointed. The term was a title, not a name, and in the OT God used several during some theologically important instances. Satan wasn't considered evil, merely someone you were supposed to disagree with.

If I recall corretly it wasn't until much later that Satan and the Devil and Lucifer and all that were rolled into one character, and that that character was considered evil. And it wasn't until Paradise Lost that we got the concept of Satan ruling Hell--in Donte's work, for example, he was a prisoner.

I think a lot of religious people get Dante's work confused with the Bible. I heard a fundy preacher once say the Satan was God's music minister before he was cast out of heaven.

I challenge anyone to name the book and verse this little tidbit of information came from.

Ezekiel 28:13b: "The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created."

Verse 14a places Satan at the very throne of God prior to his fall from grace:
“ You were the anointed cherub who covers."

I thought maybe Dante's Purgatorio, but nobody reads that. Milton?

(I should be working. Satan would want me to continue to work on my music.)

eta: Looking this up led me to many fundy posts. Urp.

True. Cracked.com did an article on various parts of our view of the Devil that came from outside the Bible, and it amounted to "all of it". The Bible doesn't have much to say on the topic, honestly--a few brief blurbs, and a few cases of mistaken identity (the serpent in Eden, the beast in Revelation, etc) are all that theologians have to go on. The rest is, depending on how you look at it, new revelations postdating the Bible or simply making crap up (often to demonize other religions).

In that way he's probably the most sympathetic character in the Bible--he's a minor, nearly non-existent character that's the victim of the single greatest smear capaign of all time.

I wonder what fundies would think of atonal music? Probably make them vomit with rage.

There is so much culture that is completely off their radar. (speaking in general, of course. I'm sure there are exceptions.)
