I think the real scandal is that it was allowed to deteriorate so much.

I hope they manage to restore the fresco properly, but I couldn't help laughing at the amateur job. :-)

At first glance, this restoration attempt is hilarious, but then I stop to realizes that the painting is probably destroyed beyond repair, then I look at it again and break out laughing again!

This brings up a question I've been asking myself for years - doesn't "Restoring" paintings basically ruin the artists' work (if you're painting over the original artwork)? Cleaning the artwork is fine (if done well), but repainting over it seems to be replacing the artist's work with someone elses.

I don't see what the fuss is about. Simply change the date from the 19th century to the early twentieth, and suddenly it's a masterpiece again.

In this case, isn't it kind of a functional object as well. As a religious icon, maybe it makes sense to restore it in a way that it wouldn't purely as a work of history or art.

It's real, I saw a video earlier where the woman talks about it, how she made it no secret, and people watched her as she was doing it. Also, she came forward when she realized it wasn't turning out quite like she'd planned.

Well, I think it's all a conspiracy! The church is claiming this woman ruined the fresco, but they secretly cut the original out of its location to sell it off. They needed the money, and they knew the folks in the area would be angry if they learned their favorite piece of art would be sold like that. Especially since the buyers were atheist aliens from another solar system. So, they used this poor lady as a patsy. She was hand picked by the CIA and FBI because they needed to ruin her reputation after she was about to expose the Mars Landing hoax they had constructed. It's all terribly complicated. But, you can see by some of her brush strokes that this isn't a real botched restoration. It's clearly a hoax made to look like a botched restoration. No botched job could ever look that hideous. See what I mean?

What I find so perversely amusing about this "restoration" effort is the total wrongness of every single line, shape, brushstroke, color and value choice. Each flowing contour has been slathered over with broad, awkward shapes. Every hue transmuted into mud. The light source rendered unidentifiable. A sensitive and photographically realistic portrait polymorphed into a cubistic monkey.

There is not a single one: one comparison of any square millimeter that can favorably be made between the two images. It's quite simply one of the worst pieces of "art", or craft, or handiwork, that I've ever seen.

Apparently, the painting was in much better shape than the "before" image just two years ago, before the old lady started working on it:

Quote:
An original photograph of the painting taken in 2010, shows only minimal deterioration with Jesus crowned in thorns clearly visible in the portrait. There is slight white speckling across the piece.

Large white patches appear in a second photograph of the painting taken in July this year, possibly scrubbed off as the octogenarian began her project.

A final photograph reveals a portrait transformed beyond recognition.

Restoring a painting does have its purposes. It should not ruin the original artists' work. It should restore the painting to how it looked when it was first painted. If any paint is added then an expert with the right tools can see what has been added. Sometimes restoring a painting involves removing previous restoration work. Like someone might once have put varnish over the painting. This varnish could be removed as part of the restoration.

Restoration might also involve taking photos of the painting in different wavelengths (from microwaves to X-ray) to see how the painting has been altered since the canvas was new.

What's interesting is that she got so far with it before realizing that she was out of her depth, so she obviously thought she'd captured the eyes and other features well...

Why didn't the people who saw her stop her? Although you might think she was an authorised person when she first started, when you could see the quality of the work that she was doing, wouldn't you say something?

Heh, now that I look at it that way I can't see it the way I saw it before. Poor, stupid, untalented woman. I wonder what previous work she showed the owners that convinced them she had the skills to restore the Ecce Homo?

Yes, I would have spoken up without a moment's hesitation, the instant I saw her obliterate the eyes.

She didn't ask, she just got to work. I'm just fascinated by what she could have been thinking. Did she think she was able to "fix it"? Was she just upset because her icon's picture was deteriorating and she didn't want him fading away? Did she dream up a scenario where she'd be feted for saving the picture?

I think the caption should be "god works in mysterious ways..."

Can't stop laughing.

I mean, it is pretty bad. But... *looks at it again*

Jesus gets a facial

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/interna...=International

"An elderly parishioner’s attempt to touch up this cherished but deteriorating Spanish church fresco has turned Jesus into a cartoon figure.
The unidentified woman, in her 80s, was upset at the damage that moisture was wreaking on the 19th century fresco in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church near Zaragoza.
Without authorization, the devoted woman scraped away some of the paint, leaving white marks on the wall.
Then she took out a paintbrush and replaced the strokes of artist Elias Garcia Martinez with her own, Spanish media reported."

He looks happier!
