Indian Village Bans Cell Phones for Women

As the National explains, such laws are not unusual in northern India, and the Supreme Court has asked state governments to investigate the local councils.

What a backwards country.

Cell phones and rental by the minute are a growing cottage industry in small villages in India, and that empowers the women who are doing it.

This is nothing more than a way to try to strip the empowerment, and push the women back into virtual slavery.

If the daughter elopes with her significant other... does the dowry have to get paid?

I assume that if this is the case, then possibly a big reason for the push for this ban are the boy's parents going nuts because they're not getting a dowry from the bride's family. If that's not the case, then... I dunno.

" but picking someone for love seems to be statistically much more disastrous.

Have the men in the village considered the possibility that the women find them revolting and are seeking less repulsive suitors?

If they considered it, do you think it would matter? It's not like they're going to try to solve the problem by trying to be less repulsive instead of forcing the women into a local marriage.
