On Algeria and the civil war in the nineties (although focused on the de-radicalization of a certain segment of the Islamist guerilla):
http://www.mei.edu/content/islamist-...and-failures-0 I'm sure you'll find quite a few testimonies about the possible infiltration of the GIA by the DRS, it's a possibility that has been aknowledged by many, including the Foreign Office. Now if you want to include Bush-the USA-Western neo colonialism-France into that, I wish you a merry time doing so. To my knowledge no analyst was able to make complete sense of the bombings in France in the nineties, whether working on an islamist hypothesis or the idea of a manipulated GIA. I should also note that the Algerian regime of today is the continuation of the one installed after the independence, that it had at the time a socialist streak in its theorizing, that its anti-colonial cred was probably only rivaled by Vietnam, and that its relations to France were since then never subversient (although strong in some domains) for much too obvious reasons. |

To be honest, you can certainly make sense of them as false flag attacks. The problem however is that doing so certainly does not fit any "neo-colonialist" grid and in fact would exemplify a Western nation being blackmailed for support. Which I am not sure fits too much with some of the rhetoric I see sometimes displayed. |

Laeke, thanks for the link to JJ's post, I might get back to you on that but frankly as I told you I'm not that knowledgeable about the specifics of Algerian politics and really doubt that I can advance your knowledge without doing some homework I am not willing to do as I have other priorities.
But I don't think we are that far away in our assessments, as your comments about French foreign policy tell me. I may have spend more time on researching false flag events than you have and therefore really don't find the claims you cited from Keenan extraordinary, while you obviously do. Came across two sources about the thread topic today who kind of agree with me and could be interesting to you. One is a radio interview with Canadian Journalist Eric Margolis, who once interviewed the late Bin Laden (they mention both Keenan and Escobar), and the other is a quite to-the-point comment by a member of the Belgian Parliament:

So far, it looks like this is being resolved rather well.

Details are emerging about Timbuctoo under the Islamists. It does not make pretty reading. Let's just say they might have been even more ruthless then the Taliaban when it ran Afghanistan.

The worst atrocities were the beatings and amputations for what some people would not consider a felony, and the destruction of so many books.
Chase them out to the desert and bring in airstrikes. These fools need to be utterly crushed, even if they are running for their lives. |

So Hollande went to Mali to bath in ephemeral glory.
Certainly a tad premature (still airstrikes on northern Kidal, according to official communications), but I think it is a clear sign that he wants at all costs to avoid any sort of mission creep. French Army will shift as soon as possible to garrisoning key strategic points, I guess. I will repeat myself, but I appreciate the UK support, certainly one of the more forthcoming. Belgium supplied a couple helicopters and teams for medical evac as well. |
