Being Norwegian I'm a bit embarassed by this. An earlier sure-fire way to get the Nobel peace price was to start a minor war and then end it. Compared to that, stating your good intentions are less destructive, but I must say that the Nobel comittee could have waited for some results before they gave the price away.

Hmm, perhaps they are on to something:
I think I'll start awarding PhDs for the theses students are trying to write.
or
we can start buying products that companies are trying to make. (arguably this is what the software industry is doing)

this is dumb.

Anyway, he'll certainly accept it.. but I bet his speech is loaded with "this is very premature" sort of language.

There were apparently a record 205 people on the list including apparently Morgan Tsvangirai and Sarkozy. The list of candidates is kept secret by the Nobel committee for 50 years although those who are allowed to nominate candidates are allowed to release their names if they wish.

You're probably right about the speech. He would make a far bigger statement by saying that he doesn't deserve it - yet - and tell them to give it to someone more deserving.

Seems kind of like giving somebody a gardening award for planting one tree the day before the award is presented.

Just a wee bit early.

The Nobel committee's machinations are somewhat old news...as I posted on another site, Jimmy Carter and Arafat were at least involved in some kind of important diplomatic process (I won't say critical, because Jimmy was just basically kicking America in the shins). But Gore and Obama? How does any of their work directly relate to peace??

True. I thought about revising that to "give Glenn Beck another reason to cry", but that doesn't work either.

Weird. I agree with E.J.Armstrong.

I hope its not just my bias but I think its a bit premature to say that he has achieved much for peace yet. Maybe they are hoping he will live up to the award.

Will he actually accept it?

And yet he is commander in chief of an army currently at war.

Go figure.

And sure, blah, blah, blah, Bush started it, its not his war, and all that garbage.

To truly deserve this award, the very first thing he should have done after inauguration was to pull all troops out of combat and end all fighting. Didn't happen. Doesn't deserve it.

This guy runs on a campaign to double-down on Afghanistan, and he wins the Peace Prize? See, it's the crazy Europeans who are in the cult of Obama.

That was an MTV award, but these days a an MTV award is a grammy is a Nobel anyway. In fairness to Obama, I heard he broke up a quite nasty fight between Sasha and Malia (one of them used the word "stupidface").

Or maybe the MTV Video Music Awards.

Angela Merkel stands at the podium. "And for our next award, here is who has contributed the most to world peace. And the winner is...Barack Obama!"

Amidst much applause and some confused looks, the camera gets a close up af Barack giving a fist bump to Michele and Malia squealing with delight from the audience gallery. He strides up to the stage and takes the mike.

"My fellow Americans, I would like to thank..."

Suddenly Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was waiting to present the next award (Most Dramatically Wrong Version Of World History), snatches the mike out of his hands. Obama stood stunned as he watch the Iranian speak.

"By the grace of Allah, Khamenei did the most for peace. Without him there would be blood in the streets of Ir--"

The secret service wrestled him to the ground amidst a chorus of boos, and he was escorted off the stage.

Barbara Streisand led the audience in a rousing "O-Ba-Ma" chant as he composed himself and went on with his speech.

"Well, you can't blame a man for speaking his mind," said Joe Wilson (R) of South Carolina. Glen Beck protested the entire event and vowed never to appear in another music video, saying that this was further proof that the industry was controled by a bunch of hooligans.

Same reactions over here. Obama is quite liked, but it seems a bit early to credit him with major achievements deserving of a Nobel peace prize.

On behalf of the part of the US who did not vote for him, we'll happily trade you for Sarkozy. And we'll throw in Reid and Pelosi.

We have no idea when he was nominated. Only that the deadline to submit nominations was February 3rd.

If he was nominated for his int'l peace work as President, it was after less than 2 weeks of work.

If he was nominated for his int'l peace work before becoming President, well, there doesn't seem to be any.

Who would have nominated Obama for a Nobel Peace Prize for his peace work prior to the deadline, and why?

Not to sound all "conspiracy-ee" but one wonders about the high profile meetings Obama is holding today and this weekend regarding the requested troop surge in Afghanistan.

Perhaps the thinnking is that this might "encourage" him to make a certain decision on that matter.

After all, it might be considered bad form to accept the Peace prize and then send tens of thousands of more troops into a war zone...

In the case of Afghanistan, no decision he can make will end the war.

Even if the US pulls out there will still be a war in Afghanistan. There was already a war there when the US went in.

This kind of shorts them too if he actually does do anything to promote peace. At this rate of Obama peace work: awards, he's going to have either a four-peat or an eight-peat. Obama is JUST THAT GOOD AT PEACE!

In keeping with their lofty standards, the Nobel Prize Committee has announced the following Nobel Prizes for 2009:

Economics: Bernard Madoff

Chemistry: Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons

Medicine: Jenny McCarthy

Physics: Steven E. Jones

Literature: Sylvia Browne

This seems to be the pattern of Obama's life. Rewards sans accomplishments. Hope but little substance. Continuing expectations that never seem to arrive.

Maybe he'll surprise me...

I think that helped the decision process too.

Also, while he's been in the office 9 months, I thought I caught a factoid on the radio this morning that said the judging process itself (or maybe it was the nomination process) completed about 2 weeks after he took office. So other than his inspiring speeches, I don't know what else he's really done to deserve this prize.

He also won Time's 2008 man of the year. That one I can see. Maybe the Nobel committee just got caught up in the frenzy back then?

Who would have nominated Obama for a Nobel Peace Prize for his peace work prior to the deadline, and why?
Any person holding office in a national legislature can send in a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. I suspect the sitting US President has been nominated every year for decades.

The Nobel Committee can pick from any of those nominated for the prize. But they don't have to base their decision on the reasons stated in the nomination letter.

Actually; Glen Beck will probably use this as “another example that President Obama has sold out America to the rest of the world and here is his reward from the leftist international community.”

So it goes.

Actually; I am surprised how quickly Glen Becks’ name pops up in many of the political threads here.

BTW: I believe that a human transporter (Star Trek version) would be a great scientific achievement. I have not invented one as yet, but can I still get the Nobel Prize for Science?

I very much doubt you'd get a bargain with Sarkozy. The man is mad, as in "I'm the new Napoleon, and they'll all pay for the sarcasm and for stealing my marbles when I was 6". And you can keep the others, we already got Royal and Le Pen.
