Madonna sued in Russia for supporting gay rights

Activists are demanding damages of nearly $10.5 million, claiming they were offended by her St. Petersburg concert.

Quote:

A group of Russian activists are demanding 333 million rubles, or nearly $10.5 million, in damages from Madonna, saying they were offended by her Aug. 9 concert in St. Petersburg, when she showed support for gay rights. While Russia as a whole isn’t exactly gay friendly, the anti-gay sentiment is particularly strong in St. Petersburg, where a law passed earlier tis year that makes it illegal to “promote” homosexuality to minors, points out the Associated Press.

The lawyer representing the activists told Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency that a total of nine people filed lawsuits demanding compensation for “moral damages” due to Madonna's “open promotion of homosexuality.” Not all of those who filed suit attended the concert, but they “saw media reports,” according to the lawyer.
Russia.

We need this kind of stuff to remind us to appreciate the freedom we have here.

It's like modern Russia is trying to make the Soviets look good by comparison.

Gee, in America you can get a court hearing when you sue Puff Daddy for 900 billion dollars for knocking down the World Trade Center, and get similar articles printed. So, the question is how long before it's tossed...

The law outlawing "promoting homosexuality to minors" is surely wrong and stupid though.

Kasparov just got arrested again for, among other things, supporting them.

At least she didn't show half a second of half a tit on tv. Imagine the trouble that would've come out of that!

Janet Jackson wasn't charged, fined, or sued over that incident.

And Puff Daddy was sued for the 9/11 attacks.

I think the Madonna lawsuit will have more legs, actual lawyers filed it not a lone batguano crazy nut with enough money for the filing fee.

I was actually speaking generally of Russia's amazing backwardness. In my youth, they were a superpower! Mighty! Feared! Technologically advanced! Today they're imprisoning girl bands for being rude in churches, and trying to sue Madonna. The Soviets were evil, but they were serious. This Russia? It's a joke.

And look at the way they assassinate dissenters, in the old days you had umbrella guns, now it is radioactive sushi.

Ok both those are pretty cool.

To be fair, I can see how that might be seen as promotion of homosexuality.

That old fearsome Russia wasn't all that much of a thing to be feared.
A lot of their weaponry was (and is) just junk.
SAC was flying formations of B-47s over the SU without any effective response before Powers.
The occasional encounter was just bad luck.

They're just doing what Russians do - trying to get money any way they can. If being "offended" by Madonna gives them a shot at a chunk of Madonna's millions, they're going to take it.

Hey, they tried seizing the world and turning the "capitalists" upside down and shaking them, but that turned out to be more expensive than profitable. All in all, I think suing celebrities who "offend" them is an improvement.

Madonna, for her part, would be well advised to stay out of Russia. The dumb bitch.

To defend my Comrades, homosexuality was quite openly accepted in Russia for a long time. Under Peter the Great they started regulating military homosexuality, and then in 1832 they criminalised it entirely. Homosexuality was legalised after the 1917 Revolution (Russia only). Stalin criminalised it again in 1933. That law was then repealed in 1993.

So they are really backwardly forwardly backwardly forward. I think.

Russia went from communism to fascism. Looking at the political spectrum as a circle, it was just a small step to the side.

And according to my wife, who grew up in the Soviet Union, life is much worse in Russia now than then.

Democracy is the only political system that has ever worked in the long term. Democracies don't go to war with each other. The only future for humans is worldwide democracy. Everything else has been a failure.

They had the US beat by several years in Abolition as well. I'll grant that their civil war reinstituted slavery while America's ended it.
