I genuinely don't get how this becomes a good thing in any context.

Seriously, somebody tell me the context. Give me the argument that ends in the words "... and that's why I wish I could smash their babies heads on the rocks."

Because I'd like to hear that argument. I really would.

There is no context that makes this a good thing. The early Jewish tribes were bloodthirsty barbarians worshiping a tyrant god.

Why did they invent such an evil god?

Why was Molech invented, who demanded sacrifice of children burned alive? Canaan was a vicious place.

They didn't have horror movies in those days, so that had to do.

Genocide can never be justified, I'm not advocating killing the ancient Israelites. But if the Babylonians had managed to stamp out the Israelites' pernicious religion, today we would have no Judaism, no Christianity, and probably no Islam.

Hmmm.
And your source for that information about Moloch's demands is...?

I ask because I live in a country where leaping through a bonfire at the summer solstice for 'purification' from bad luck is still popularly practised.
As is fire-walking.

And yes, I leaped the bonfire myself.
Pascal's wager, you know.

There's not enough food for all of us, so if I want my children to survive, the others must be killed, and that's why I wish I could smash their babies heads on the rocks.

our tormentors demanded songs of joy;
they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

4 How can we sing the songs of the Lord
while in a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, Jerusalem,
may my right hand forget its skill.

on the day Jerusalem fell.
“Tear it down,” they cried,
“tear it down to its foundations!”

happy is the one who repays you

Damn, that's a kick-ass poem. Sometimes, I, too, want sweet, sweet revenge.

(eta: my post *not* directed at you, keale. I'm just quoting the poem.)

So if you're ever offered the job of being God of a universe, don't take it. You don't have the right temperament.
