I am puzzled by your phrasing "people want little ethnic groups to be subsumed into massive countries, and that just isn't going to happen". WHICH people? Such subsumption is not going to happen precisely because people (as in, members of these ethnic groups) do not want it. Who in your opinion does want massive countries?
Sorry the post was half-assed, I was listening to this song (*NSFW) while I was typing it . What I honestly believe I meant there is that larger ethnic groups within the said countries are reluctant for the smaller ethnic groups in the said countries to gain independence. If that even remotely makes any sense at all. I think that's what it meant. But I would have to double back.

I don't think speculating about the motives for members of the larger grouping wanting to keep the smaller grouping is terribly constructive. I could tell you several reasons I think England wants to keep Scotland, but it would only start a slanging match.

Which is why I only partially took the time to try and recap my old statement. It honestly wasn't the lynchpin of my argument.

Funny thing. I'm doing an Early Music summer school in Durham in July, and we've had instructions on which pieces of music we should prepare. One of the instructions for the solo singing class is "a piece by Purcell".

The obvious answer for my voice is Fairest Isle. Except, it's something generally shunned in Scottish nationalist circles, because of the impression that the whole isle is England. The piece was written before 1707, of course. It's not that straightforward, because it's part of the incidental music to King Arthur, and Arthurian times go back to before the isle was split.

Anyway, I thought I'd choke back my irrational prejudices and learn the song. I dug around in the music cabinet and found three versions in three different keys in three different books. In one book the song was entitled Address to Britain. This title had been heavily scored out, obviously by my mother, whose book it was.

Hmmmm. Odd what little byways nationalist sentiment sometimes runs in.

Without clicking on the link, I make an educated guess that the song has something to do with butts.

Surprisingly not, it has to do with women and bottles. No butts though.
