I know it may not be realistic, but I'm not ever going to put tribal and theocratic legal traditions on par with modern, secular ones. Ever.

And yes, it would still be better if they became atheists.

Within my lifetime I've known women who were told by their RC priest to not protest, "make a fuss" about abuse (physical) at the hands of their husband as he was a "good man" and we all have weaknesses. One would hope today that wouldn't happen, but I'm not too sure...
