I'm at work, was this the one where one of the hosts didn't know if the Earth was round or flat?

She should rightly be embarassed to open her mouth on any subject whatsoever.

Yes...

To be on TV means...from the President to I Love NY II -- no one is embarassed to open their mouths. It is what makes our culture so dynamic.

What seems weird to me is that she's pretty obviously lying. I mean, she's claiming that she has no opinion on whether the world is round or not? I would say it is literally impossible to have grown up in modern day America and not have seen dozens of pictures of the Earth; globes, photos taken from space, science fiction movies, you name it. These are not something you can live your life and be unaware of!

So it's not that she's genuinely ignorant... she just doesn't want to express an opinion for some reason.

I think she acts like that because she seems to think that ignorance is something good. She states that she doesn't care about knowing stuff, she just cares about taking care of her child, then she expects people to praise the priority she makes. She seems not to understand that a kid needs a mom that is at least slightly more intelligent and knowing than a balloon

She will not make a statement of opinion on this matter b/c she is supposed to represent a specific demographic in their audience. That demographic recognizes the inconsistency of their own belief but cannot state it b/c it would have negative repercussions in all the aspects of their life that arent happening while watching the "view." When she says that she would rather take care of her kid, she is really speaking in code for "no comment."

When you find Whoppi Goldberg talking down to you, then you should probably consider either getting an education or, if you already have one, getting a job where you don't have to be afraid to say "the world is round."

She's not afraid to say it - she just needs to go to the library first.

Wow.

Talk about glorifying anti-intellectualism. That woman would be an ideal citizen of a banana republic.

Same woman as referenced in this thread, where she talks about how Christianity was the first religion.

Agreed.

But why? Why in the name of all that is holy would she do that?

Seems like this is as good a place as any for this post:

Quote:
David Letterman's Top Ten Reasons Why Network News Producers Do Not Give Science More Air time:

Number Ten: They are unable to locate file footage of the Big Bang.
Number Nine: They think that high-temperature superconductors are too hot to handle.
Number Eight: El Niño is covered by the weather department.
Number Seven: They already did the O.J. DNA story.
Number Six: They are unable to find information about semiconductors in the music section of the library.
Number Five: They are afraid of reporting on dark matter because they think it is contagious.
Number Four: They are waiting for cold fusion.
Number Three: They think that the greatest scientific achievement is Tang.
Number Two: They wouldn't know the superconducting supercollider from a hole in the ground.
And the number one reason why network news producers do not give science more air time: Scientists are from Mars . . . Journalists from Venus.
Thanks to Denver Skeptic Linda.

You might all be right that that's it. It's sad though, if that's the case, that anyone would be cautious to speak up on the fact that the earth is round. I'd rather lose some viewers...

If you notice at the beginning of the clip the discussion involves evolution. It then seems to move to a general discussion of the scientific method.

Given that:

A) Evolution is a wildly hot button issue for a certain demographic and

B) Evolution is a scientific pursuit therefore

C) Outright agreement with any scientific finding will (especially in the time compressed nature of a TV show) seem to lead to a slippery slope, which may

D) Affect ones popularity with said demographic, leading

E) To an interruption or diminishment of income.

Therefore the fall back to "Won't someone think of the children."

(,.,.,;.;. for the punctuation folks use as needed)

One of the comments on that video made me smile:

GOD KILLED 13 PUPPIES WHEN HE SAW THAT VIDEO

Is it getting so that it's not PC to agree with any science?
