More dangerous breast cancer nonsense

I found this extremely worrying spam e-mail in my inbox this morning. I have had to post the full text so that we can see it all in context, sorry about the length of it. I will carry out my own analysis of this nonsense in my next post but I just thought I would post it unedited first (appalling grammar and spelling left intact):

Quote:
PREVENT Breastcancer, Take Action
Final Reminder !! , Only a few days to go, Buy this book on December 12 2007, and support the holistic approach in preventing breast cancer.

After decades of research and billion dollars spent biomedical science has not yet discovered the cause for breast cancer. Every 13 minutes someone dies of breastcancer. Even if biomedical methods and technologies have enormously improved, health care costs have risen at a very high rate synchronistically.

Many organisations work together to beat this disease, however the Heal Breast Cancer Foundation is the only independent organisation that truly works on a holistic approach.
Their independent research projects will shift the mainstream focus away from a biomedical, symptomatic therapy model towards a biopsychosocial prevention model.

That is why I support them and want to donate ALL my profits to them. All (!!!) revenue of the sales of my book (sold on December 12 2007) "Healing Psyche" will be donated to their campaign and research. If my book ends up in the top 5 of amazon.com then I will make an additional donation of $500 to support their cause.

so how can YOU help to combat breastcancer:
- BUY the book "Healing Psyche: Patterns and Structure of Complementary Psychological Cancer Treatment (CPCT)" on december 12 2007
- If you have a amazon.com profile, then ADD my book to “Your Wishlist” and “Your Listmania Lists”. you can find this on your profile page on the righthand side under “Your Lists” and “Your Participation”.
- BUY a copy for your friends and one for your MEDICAL DOCTOR, HOSPITAL, or any other health professional
- Add a REVIEW on amazon.com. Search my book and add your review.
- PROMOTE this book and HBCF action towards blogs you maintain or visit.
- SEND this email to your friends and people you know. When you include their mail and healingpsyche@stressvrij.nu in the CC when your forward your mail then you have a change to winning a free copy.
- ADD the press release or any information of this book to your WEBSITE
- If you have more books on your whishlist buy them at the same time. Then this book will be visible when people surf amazon on the section "people who also bought this book".
- MENTION this action to blogs and newsletters, or anything else on the INTERNET

See, it is very easy to contribute to the Heal Breast Cancer Foundation. So take ACTION NOW and contribute

*More information on HBCF can be found on "healbreastcancer"
*More information of the book healing psyche can be found on the internetsite "healingpsyche"

Official press release:
Landmark Study Reveals New and Innovative Concepts in Psychological Cancer Treatment

Author Rob van Overbruggen PhD shares his expertise and utilizes the power of the human mind to influence the cancer process in Healing Psyche

ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands – In Healing Psyche: Patterns and Structure of Complementary Psychological Cancer Treatment (CPCT), author Rob van Overbruggen describes the evolution of his ground-breaking concepts in psychological cancer treatment, how they differ from the more traditional psychological modalities, and how they have been carefully developed into a complete and complementary approach to treating cancer by tapping into the powers of the human mind.

During the research process, Van Overbruggen discovered overlapping patterns from different psychological approaches to cancer therapy. In his book, he identifies those psychological patterns that influence the cancer process and how those patterns can be changed to aid the healing process. Supported by many references to scientific literature, Healing Psyche is an analysis of the influence of mindset, behavior, emotions, and coping styles on cancer.

Based on his meticulous research, Van Overbruggen makes scientifically based suggestions for creating effective programs for somatic healing and offers tips for further research into the healing potential of the mind. The book will be of great help and interest to a wide range of health practitioners and therapists who work with patients diagnosed with cancer. Patients themselves will also benefit from the new hope that these alternative healing approaches provide. Part therapeutic guidebook and part research dissertation, Healing Psyche will serve as a valuable addition and support to integrative medicine.

“This is a groundbreaking research paper that reads more like a page-turning novel. Full of absorbing case studies, Van Overbruggen presents some of the most provocative and mind-bending cancer research around.”
- Ellen Tanner Marsh, New York Times best-selling author

For more information or to request a free review copy, members of the press can contact the author at his site 'healingpsyche'. Healing Psyche: Patterns and Structure of Complementary Psychological Cancer Treatment (CPCT) is available for sale online at Amazon.com, BookSurge.com, and through additional wholesale and retail channels worldwide.

But he's giving away ALL (!!!) of the profits, ALL of the PROFITS of sales on Dec. 12, 2007

If his book makes the top five on Amazon he'll give an additional $500. I would have hoped if his book made the Amazon top five he'd be a little more generous with his quack-earned funds.

If MY as of yet unwritten book makes the Amazon top five I'll give the JREF $1000 at least.

I would be interested to learn of the relationship between the author and the organisation. My analysis will be delayed until I have determined this.

ETA: Aha! Here we are. I knew I could smell something!

Let's take a look at the following link, which takes us to the META-Medicine and Heal Breast Cancer Foundation (the lucky recipient of the funds from the book sale):

http://www.meta-medicine.nl/mmdir/index.php

The interesting part comes when we look at the bottom of the page and see:

Quote:
2006-2007 This software copyright, developed and owned by Mexion, all rights reserved.
Please Bear with me, I'm going somewhere with this!

The next page is rather interesting:

http://www.robvanoverbruggen.com/index-1.html

We find out that our kind and charitable author is...

Quote:
...the founder and director of Mexion, a company specializing in therapy and training.
Just who is Mr van Overbruggen giving away all these profits to? I think we can all fill in the gaps ourselves!

The best-selling author testimonial

----
“This is a groundbreaking research paper that reads more like a page-turning novel. Full of absorbing case studies, Van Overbruggen presents some of the most provocative and mind-bending cancer research around.”
- Ellen Tanner Marsh, New York Times best-selling author

----

Based on Ms. Marsh's genre of writing (ripped-bodice romance novels-- yes, I am judging a book by its cover), I question her ability to identify not only what constitutes mind-bending research but what constitutes a page-turning novel.

I realize that this post is somewhat of an ad hominem attack, but it's a ad hominem attack in response to an appeal to an (irrelevant) authority.

If the cap fits...

Anyway, I think we can discount the author's generosity and benevolence; the only "generosity" being shown is to his own pockets!
