Woo Wooism shows up on Pet Star

Today on the Animal Planet channel's "Pet Star" show, a big woo-woo showed up.

Nancy Yaros from Philadelphia and her dog Sweetie.

First, the pet trick was the classic "literate dog" trick. She convinced the judges that her dog can actually read by having the dog pick the correct flash cards from numbers to letters to even pictures of the judges. The conjurers in this group should know the trick to this one easily. I think it is poor taste to use magician's tricks to fool people into thinking that a dog has been trained to read and do math.

Second, this lady claims that the dog is her mother re-incarnated. When questioned as to why, she claimed that the dog spelled "mom" when asked "who are you inside" and then the dog spelled "Dorothy" when asked "what is the name of who is inside". (Dorothy being the trainer's mom)

It just pisses me off when I see woo-wooism like this, especially when they exploit innocent creatures.

Me and the wife were very happy to see that this lady (despite getting a perfect 30 from judges), didn't win the audience's final pick.

LMAO, that's the funniest thing I've read in a while.

Sometimes it's hard to tell if the person is nuts or a con. She could have taught her dog to 'read' using methods she had looked into. Then figured she could ask the dog a question and get an intelligent answer. Successful communication that we normally can't do, because our dogs can't talk or write...just bark and whine.

She obviously taught the dog to 'spell' mom before so that the dog would know what it 'meant' (my mom's name is dorothy and this is how you spell mom and dorothy...). And you ask it any question...he'll put stuff together that has gotten him a treat/praise in the past even if he hasn't answered that question before. Put mom and dorothy together in the past probably really impressed his owner before...such a big word that dorothy is.

I bet 'spelling' mom got him lots of treats before he was asked some unintelligible junk he never 'spelt' for before.

Wow, apparently my cats know how to read and do math also.

Once, one of them walked across the keyboard and wrote "3651.;l,oiiuknbcvgtsa", I havent figured out what it means yet (it must be encrypted in some kind of code, my cats are so smart).

Just to stir it even more, I once thought I hit a cat while driving home late at night. It was a very dark road, busy with traffic but with trees either side. I completely chickened on stopping to see what had happened to the poor animal. It all happened so fast I wasn't even sure I had hit anything, or if it was a cat, and when I got home there was no mark on the car at all.

But I was upset, 'cos I'm fond of cats, and when I got home I poured my heart out to my own cat, who was the only other person in the house. He stalked away from me, turned his back on me, and appeared to refuse to "speak" to me for about three days.

Obviously, he understood every word, and was cross with me for having harmed one of his own species.

Yeah, right.

Rolfe.
