So much rubbish on Aussie TV these days!

Hi, I am a new member.
I just want to say, what is going on with so many TV programs now, like, John Edwards,(ilk), and so many psychics helping in murder cases, (they just never seem to be able to find the murderer). If they can find the bodies, why not the murderer?
Do they really want to dumb us down, so that we become more and more used to the ridiculous?
There there are the "Ghost Hunters".. and again, we are supposed to believe these are ghosts in the house etc...
On top of that, they re-enact the murders! Who wants to see that? The gore, the blood. Why do we need to see such graphic details? It's bad enough that the person was chopped up, or brutally stabbed etc... etc...

It's all very well to watch a movie, like for instance, "The Green Mile", or 6th Sense, "I see dead people all the time"... they are good fun and amusing to watch for sheer entertainment. But when this is starting to come into our daily TV shows, where they make you think it's all real. They have to justify it as if it's real by using these people in police investigations and so on. I just have to laugh when I see the faces of these men and women, when they think they "see" something, and their eyes narrow, and they "feel" that there was something, something.... what??? it's too funny. They will have to get some better actors to play these parts.

I find John Edwards so irritating. He and Sylvia Brown would really make a nice couple. Just think they wouldn't have to talk to each other, they could just "hear themselves".

Also the latest on our Aussie TV station is advertising Nostradamus again. Did Nostradamus predict 9/11 and WWIII? ... (pity we didn't read those quatrains earlier, we may have been able to warn the US of 9/11).
Why do they always say, "was it predicted?" after the fact??? not before???

Many years ago, back in the 70's when I was first introduced to James Randi, on the Don Lane Show (thank goodness), we were exposed on TV to Nostradamus's revelations, on the end of the world, the nuclear disasters etc... yet, why didn't they mention 9/11 then too??? HUH???? I ask you!

The "real world" is so wonderful, so fantastic, why do people have this need to look for things that are not real, that are pseudo, or supernatural?

G'day Aussiegirl.

I'm not sure you posted this in the right forum, but I suppose the question at the end might have a religious/philosophical aspect to it.

I think if I knew the answer to it, I would understand much that has been hidden....

ETA: I just got back from shopping and at Ashfield Mall I saw a woman sitting at a table charging people $35.00 a go for tarot readings. I gave her a dirty look. What got me mad was the fact that people were lining up to give her money. WHY????

Yeah, it's okay for fun and if you can afford to pay out money to these people. I always look at it this way. If I go into a casino, (which I rarely do), I think, I can afford to spend $10 on maybe half an hour of fun. I never win anything, yet sometimes, my luck is good and I can keep going for 30 min.

When the money's gone that's that. I was prepared to loose that money for some fun. It's much the same with these "Fortune Tellers"... most of them in the street, are just begging really, and for maybe $5.00 bucks, I don't mind them telling me some googledegook... just for fun.

I would never pay $35... no way.

It's the people who take it seriously that worry me.

By the way, I'm sure I may have put this thread elsewhere, sorry about that.. to all the "moderators".. maybe you can put me in the right place.
I am new here and it's all a bit mind boggling, this computer stuff...

Now, if I had psychic powers, it might be a bit easier....

Welcome in, you certainly sound like you belong here!!

Actually, you need to keep in mind, re:tv, ther purpose of any t.v. station in a capitalistic and basically free state is to bring in income and ratings (which bring in income). Shows are not picked to make you stupid (or ignorant), they are picked to bring in the most income. If hard physics or biology did it, you would see lots of it - but, sadly, that is not the end the majority of people want (they may say they do but look at the ratings for the truth.).
Anyway, enjoy!!

Welcome aussiegirl. I agree that there is too much woo on tv at the moment, but don't forget that this is the non-rating period, where networks dump rubbish. This is complicated by the USA scriptwriters strike which reduces content. But you can still get good shows like "Waking the Dead" on channel nine tonight, and generally good dramas on the ABC. I can't wait for "Underbelly" next month.

But again your general point is correct. I have pay TV, and can go through the seventy or so channels without finding something decent, apart from sport, which I fortunately love.

Just out of curiosity, which station is it that's advertising Nostradamus? I haven't come across the ad yet.

My guess would be that many people have a certain fear of not being able to control some of the events that occur in "real world" (death being one such event.) Supernatural things such as 'psychics' and tarot cards claim to offer some sort of insight into the future and that eliminates some of the uncertainty. Not to mention that people don't feel foolish for consulting a psychic or tarot card reader because they're generally accepted by society as 'having powers' (hence all the ridiculous 'sensing murder' type shows)

Hey and welcome!

Who is advertising the Nostradamus thing? I don't really watch much tv anymore, so I'm a bit behind on my woo-schedule.

If you're looking for something to watch, try the ads on WIN TV. I hear their voiceover guys are awesome.

*Mobyseven whistles and ambles away nonchalantly...*

Wow, yes, I'm glad to see fellow Aussie here. I'm sorry for those who asked when the Nostradamus thing is on. I really can't remember what channel it was, because I wasn't interested in seeing it so didn't pay much attention.
I am in Brisbane, and flick through the Austar channels. I happened to see it a few times. I think it was on the W channel.

I thought I might sit through one of these psychic shows tonight in fact.
These are American programs.
One of them is called "Haunting Evidence".... with a:-
Psychic,
Medium
Paranormal Profiler, whatever that means.
I was highly amused when they used Magnetic Field Sensors, whatever they are, and Infrared Camera's. When the Psychic thought she "felt" the presence of the dead girl's body, they photographed the spot. The Infrared camera picked it up. She wasn't there, she was just there before she died. They still didn't know where she was buried.
Hows that for magic eh? Wow.... they even showed you where they thought the legs and arms were in a foggy shadowy photo.... very impressive......
The Paranormal guy, thought the killer's name started with a "J"... he also saw the license plate...and also that the guy who gave the police a "tip"... ought to be investigated "further"...No kidding. (They think he's the murderer).

That was the end. I couldn't believe it. Will it be continued tomorrow??? it didn't say... don't think so... what a load of baloney!!

The next show, was Psychic Detective...

Carol Palo, is into Psychometry... first time I've heard of that term. They "see" things through someone's clothing etc... She said:
There is an energy that creeps up my chest and to my throat... the energy is guiding me.. wow...
I need some of that energy, I'm always tired..... LOL

Mobyseven, I will look out for the ads on Win TV... oh well, back to the drawing board...

We skeptics are so boring you know. We only want the "real" thing.. we have no imagination do we??? That's our whole problem you know... LOL

Who wants the "real" thing? I'd kill to be able to shoot fire from my hands an fly unaided. Unfortunately, we are stuck with reality...

As has been said it's an advert for the History channel for "Prophecy Month" (read: thing that doesn't seem to be about but will mention, a lot and then turn out to be about, WWII from a woo perspective).

Besides, as far as I know W only shows ads for CI (why regular Law and Order is on there, while the rest are on TV1 confuses me) in the same way CI only shows ads for W.

Glad to see a fellow Not Victorian here .

My custom title should explain why.

Actually I don't have anything against them but you have to keep state rivalries going..

That's funny...I can see Wildy's name, but for some reason his posts don't show up. Probably because he's from a third world state...

Yes, I forgot we are in the "holiday" TV mode, hence all the rubbish. But still, today I saw another ad for a new show, and it's about psychics again, a woman this time.
I've already forgotten her name. Sorry, I didn't take much notice until I heard, "psychic"...and talking for the dead.... Will it never end??
This starts in the "new season" so it's continuing.

You are right. His post is empty. Must be because this is an Australian only thread. Only hope a mod does not come along and post a mod box. It would be empty.
