Quasars Grow Up

When i was a kid, quasars were all the rage, being newly discovered. I think there was even a TV or something named after them.

they were a mystery bright, small and really far away.

As a mystery many strange things were siad about them.

DRD (and others) please discuss how the theory and data have expanded and grown to include Active Galactic Nucleus. And what about the Seyferts weren't they a start down that path?

With out knowing what was to follow Edward Fath of Lick Observatory takes a spectrum of M77 and finds six spectral lines of the “Planetary nebula type”. 1908

Slipher makes a better observation in 1917 and confirm the spectral lines.

These are broad emission lines and not the ‘usual’ ones.

Seyfert in 1941,1943 defines what are now called Seyfert galaxies as having broad emission lines of a certain type (highly ionized) and a bright luminous center.

M77 is the prototype.

Post WWII extra galactic radio sources are identified. Cygnus A found in 1939 and decided along with others to be an extra galactic source. Bolton &Stanley 1948, Baade & Minkowski 1954.

Burbidge points out the incredible energy output the in radio spectrum. 1956

Radio source 3C273 is occluded by the moon and observed by many 1963

Maarten Schmidt measures emission lines in 3C273 and determines a redshift of 0.16. This small object far away is as 100x brighter in luminosity as the whole milky way galaxy but looks star like.

Quasi Stellar Object is born.
