Google Selects Your Card

Corporate Magic

Google Selects Your Card

You ask someone to select a card from the pack which they do. Then you have one or two goes at guessing it but you are wrong. Then you say, i know, "lets ask Google". You then proceed to bring up Google on your computer. All you do is type in "what is the card please" press the google image search button and Google comes up with pictures of their card. I tried this on people at work and they were absolutely floored by it. Of course when any non magician tries to duplciate it they don't get the answer but a search on the words "what is the card" as you would expect.

You need some preperation before this trick happens. First, bookmark this page:
http://ipolygraph.com/google/images.pl

This is a fake version of google although it looks like the real thing. Now get someone to select a card from your deck. You need to know the card so either force it or control it to the bottom and glimpse it during a shuffle. Have a guess at the card but get the wrong one and suggest that you "ask Google"

Bring up the fake google on your screen. You can clear the the URL display bar at the top beforehand if you want and type in www.google.com or just leave it how it is. (Most people don't notice, but to be safe just have it cleared).

Type into the search box /ad/ or /4c/ or /1s/ or /qh/ etc according to what their card is. These stand for ace of diamonds, four of clubs, 10 of spades, or queen of hearts etc. The cool thing is that the /ad/ etc won't appear in the box it will come out as "what". Now continue typing and you will have "what is the card please?"

Press search or enter and Google will perform a search on the card you typed in. An image will come up with pictures of the ace of diamonds. Cool huh? The image search doesn't work brilliantly with cards such as the 5 of spades so why not force a well known card like the queen of hearts? This is what you will see: Queen of Hearts

Doesn't work for me. Several years ago there was another site that was similar. It worked, but I don't even know if it's still around.

Can't get it to work. Got taken to the real Google Images. If this is spam, it's a weird one. Does Google bother paying people for click-through's anymore?

The OP has the wrong URL. That one worked once upon a time, but Google changed something and it broke. Use this URL instead...

http://ipolygraph.com/google/google.pl

Practice it so you can type the code quickly and subtly. It's tempting to show someone several times, but don't. As simple and casual as it seems, this can be pretty strong stuff.

Has anyone tried this on an iPhone?

A few tips:

1) To make this more deceptive (Most people know that http://ipolygraph.com/google/google.pl isn't Google's real homepage.), choose from one of these options:
A: Hide the part of your browser that displays the URL (this is usually in your menus somewhere as "Hide Toolbar" or something like that)
B: Type "http://www.google.com/" in the address box, and then hit the TAB key.
C: If you're using Firefox, install the free Greasemonkey plug-in, and then use Google Fool. This way, you can do the trick with Yahoo, Flickr, or almost any site with a text-based search box!

2) If you don't want to be limited to cards, enter ANYTHING between the slashes, and that will come up as the search. This links to the full instruction page. Ask someone who their favorite movie star is, then type that between the slashes. The search will appear as, "What is it that I am looking for?"

3) Try iPolygraph, the Internet Lie Detector, the Oracle of Batboy, and Metascope (Windows only), all written by the same person!

These are great. I'm going to have to try them on my students.

Here's another amusing web trick that's been around for a while: Mind Reader.

It worked the other day, but does not work anymore.

Try this:

http://ipolygraph.com/google/

Also, did you know that typing anything between slashes works?

/this is your search term/

It hides it using the phrase, "What is it that I am looking for?" so any terms beyond that will not show up unless you close it with a /

So you can search for anything (not just images) and do all sorts of effects with this.
