Exclamation Urgent: Lost TAM 6 Audio - Can You Help?

So in keeping with grand tradition, the AV staff at the Flamingo managed to NOT record the audio portion of Saturday's TAM. We have video, but no audio at all.

This is a huge problem for us. Not only does it mean we can't make DVDs with that content, we also have no archive of a major portion of TAM.

So I turn to you.. if any of you have audio of SATURDAY at TAM 6, (even if it has video attached), please contact RICH@RANDI.ORG and let him know.

We're hoping to at least have an archive copy if nothing else. Maybe we'll get really lucky and someone will have a good enough copy of the audio that we can put it on the DVDs.

Thanks!

Unbelievable.

I hope JREF gets some sort of refund.

Refund? I'd be suing to the end of the earth. They'll have insurance against this sort of screw up anyway, but if you fail to record a unique event as per your contract, you should not only give a refund, but compensation. Especially for the lost revenue of the DVD sales and and other commercial rights.

Jeff - I emailed you the audio from my camera from the spoon bend. Haven't got anything else though

During the spoon bend, I saw a guy seated on the floor against the left wall of the room up near the front, who had a Macbook on his lap and a large microphone.

Teek, was he part of your crew, or was he recording in the room all day? Anybody know who that guy was?

I only have a few snippets of audio, but I will send them over.

I also had a bit of a video-recording goof of my own: My video camera's settings were all in weird and wacky positions, probably from whoever was using it last, in the course of my other film-related projects. And, I didn't notice 'till I got home.

The audio (and video, for that matter) quality would have been better, if only I had reset everything before TAM6!

This is a freaking disaster! Sorry; just had to state the obvious.

Jeff, please send out a postal snail-mail all-call to TAM6 attendees. Cast that net as wide as you can, mon ami. This is Woodstock for Geeks after all.

Hoping for the best.

Argh - that sucks big time!

Wasn't the SGU recording on Saturday? Could someone from their crew have recorded the entire day?

There was a guy who approached us and said he had been recording in HD. Also - Jeff, George Hrab's partner did some recording I believe. They mentioned it after the spoons. I will ask Richard who the HD guy is.

I'm actually a bit surprised that JREF didn't have their own AV person recording the conference. I've not been to previous TAMs--is it typical for JREF to rely on the hotel conference centers for this service? Is this the norm for other organization's conferences?

Oh no... As a video maker I know things like this happen from time to time but then you ALWAYS have a back up in case. All those people there.... let's hope that someone was recording. So many great talks on Saturday... come on fans of JREF, let's find that audio.

all I've got is Phil's speech for the Randi award.

Oh gosh... this is just so unacceptable on the part of the Flamingo. We should complain to the Vegas Better business people also. This is going to cost the JREF a LOT Of money.

Dammit! The one time I don't bring my voice recorder... I'm sorry you guys, I can't help. But I second the idea of snail-mailing all attendees. Odds are somebody has something.

This is a major disaster on Flamingo's part. I agree they should compensate for lost DVD sales. Saturday was the best day. This sucks.

I think perhaps the hotel requires you use their "professional".

I'm not saying what profession our AV person was in ....because it certainly wasn't video recording.

Worst case scenario (no usable Saturday audio is forth coming), can a TAM6 DVD w/ whatever content is available be sold?

Assuming you cannot recover the full audio, try combining the following:

- the random bits of audio that can be found
- any scripts that the speakers followed (and what each can recall), and
- a skilled lipreader

You should be able to subtitle the Saturday presentations to approximate what was said that day. Play some music in the background.

I wonder if any of the speakers are willing to come into a dubbing studio, to redub their words.

Breathe easy, kindred spirits. Many stones have yet to be turned. This may all work out.

But if you were gonna go with overdubs, it seems like you should at least have subscripts written in Japanese to give it the right look.

Reed has a good point. When the film "Gizmo" was being made the producers has lots of great-but silent- old film clips of inventors describing their wacky inventions and talents. What to do? They got some skilled lip readers to view the films and transcribe what people were saying. They then had actors read the script dubbing in the words. If the TAM6 video is good it should be an easy task for a lip reader to know what's being said.

Idea. Can you film new presentations? There would not be an audience, but maybe those speakers can be filmed like they would be for television? Then you could plug these in on the DVD in place of Saturday. See if the speakers will come in and do the same talk for filming, or they might film their own and send it.

It will not be the same as the actual day of, but at least their formal presentations will be on the DVD for educational purposes.

I can tell you now that you have no chance of us ever doing that mass spoon bend again

I guess the issue is the same as with voiceover: the upfront costs. If JREF manage to pursue damages and expenses from the AV folk, they'll still have to pay for all this stuff in advance, and it's not cheap.

I wonder if an estimate can be obtained first, and present that estimate as part of the suit, instead of having to pay up front first and then present receipts?

Steward Brand and the Long Now Foundation had some of the same AV problems you did. They switched to professional-multi-camera AV in 2006 and have had no problem since. Might ask them what they changed and who they used.

I am pretty sure that people doing the A/V were a professional 3rd party outfit, not the Flamingo. The Flamingo's only fault in this was recommending them.

If you look back on here - - even if you think it is all covered, have a seperate recording system that uses NO part of the location's system for input. My suggestion would be a camcorder feeding a hard-drive and with a good microphone. Preferably with someone there monitoring all the time and a back up battery pack. I generally use a minimum of two units- of which one gets an unchanging shot and the other gets the close-ups/medium/screen/s etc. and I am not a pro. I also have never lost the important shots.
