National Security Force?

Any substance to this bit of lunacy?

Googling turned up the usual conspiracy sites without any MSM's picking up on it. In this video, around 16:50 he mentions a civilian national security force (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Df2p6867_pw). He doesn't expand on the phrase "civilian national security force." I don't believe he means the military. I think he may mean something more like an expanded version of border protection/customs. I don't think it is nefarious like those at abovetopsecret etc are posting.

Heaven knows what Obama meant by that. I don't know if I am for it or agaisnt it because I don't know what the hell he meant. But I doubt it is anything to get paranoia about.
It's probably some sort of attempt to do a glorified Neighborhood Watch program. It might be a waste of money and won't accomplish much, but it is hardly a threat to our liberties.

Here is something about that from a blog posting. Make of it what you will.

Quote:
In Barack Obama’s July 2, 2008 speech calling America to national service, Obama proposed “a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as our military.

This has prompted some in the blogosphere to raise the specter of a huge new domestic paramilitary organization. Others suggest that he may have been talking about our “current non-military security agencies - FBI, CIA, NSA, DEA, DHS, etc.”

I think that both interpretations are probably wrong. If you listen to the whole speech –- or even the couple minutes before his security force proposal — I think that it’s reasonably clear that Obama is talking about expanding a range of domestic and international agencies such as AmeriCorps, the Foreign Service, and the Peace Corps — and adding some new ones.
(...)
You might want to read the whole thing.

I was thinking before looking around for it, that it had to be related to his national service idea/proposal/??. I certainly didn't think it would be a police force though the "national security force" did make me wonder.

This summer I'm interning for an excellent organization called ServeNext.org, which has 501c(3) and 501c(4) wings dedicated to basically advocating and lobbying for the expansion of national service programs - AmeriCorps, the CNCS, etc. Having pretty much spent several hours per day scrutinizing what each of the candidates say about expanding national service (both are, in fact, for it), it is plain and obvious to me that Obama is talking about this expansion of domestic volunteer coordination programs. This actually gave me quite a laugh - "civilian paramilitary organization," indeed. Yes, the Senior Corps is a paramilitary unit. Young people who want to volunteer their time to build stronger communities in exchange for a college savings fund are roving militants. Give me a break. These people just never cease to amaze with their utter gullibility, do they?
