StopKaz - Kaz's Attorney/Barrister/Solicitor

All:

As I have mentioned recently, Kaz has started up her nopnsense again, this time apparently trying to pass herself off as a medical and/or naturopathic doctor.

My ISP has recently forwarded to me a letter which was sent to them by a purported law firm on Kaz's behalf.

Since Kaz is known for, shall we say, stretching the truth, I am trying to determine whether or not this legal person (who I have spoken with) is licensed to practice law in Australia.

This person, whose name I will withold for now, has after his name on the letter, "B. JURIS, LL. B"

I believe that "LL. B" indicates a bachelor's degree in Law. However, I cannot find a definition of "B. JURIS".

Does anyone know what it means?

Also, does anyone know a resource for determining what status (if any) he has with the Australian Bar Association? Their site has a search for Barristers, and I do not find this man listed there. But, as I understand the terms, I would think this man a solicitor rather than a barrister.

Any help or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

I think B. JURIS is a bacelors degree in jurisprudence. The important one in terms of practicing law is the LLB.

There is no Australian Bar Association as far as I'm aware, rather lawyer organise into various state and territory based bodies. There are different bodies for solicitors and barristers.

Have you tried FindLaw Australia? I have absolutely no idea how effective this site is, but it claims to "[enable] you to search for a solicitor, barrister or law firm from [their] directory of over 8,000 Australian law firms and over 7,000 Australian lawyers."

Edited to add: there's also Lawyers.com.au, though lawyers have to add themselves to the site.

Can I spam this thread with lawyers? They all have the qualifications you mention

Edit: You could send them an e-mail asking is this your letter?

Yes, B.Juris is a Bachelor of Jurisprudence, from the Uni of NSW website:

Quote:
The Bachelor of Jurisprudence, unlike the LLB degree, is not designed to provide a qualification for the professional practice of law. It provides a basic knowledge of law, an opportunity to study selected legal courses of special interest, and significant study in other faculties.
And the LLB entitles you to actually practice law.

I don't know about other avenues to search online, but if you need an Aussie to make a local call to the Bar Assoc I am happy to do it for you.

I PM'd Robert with the info a barrister friend of mine gave me. Basically it is state based so the state body is where you'd have to start. Also, Robert my friend has offered to help you directly with the Australian angle so let me know and I'll pass on his email.
