Greater Houston Area Skeptic Society start-up

In scouting on meetup.com, I found about 30 people interested in a Houston skeptic society, but no one that stepped up to start one.

For lack of a better idea, I sent out a notice to all those hungry souls for Wednesday, August 27, 6:30 pm, at Rajun Cajun.

I suspect weekends might be better, and we should rotate the venue, but I have to start somewhere.

PLEASE come! also, send this to anyone you know that might be interested, not just JREF members. Once I get some feedback, I might ask to reserve the back room at the restaurant.

Because the PM here is a bit cumbersome, I'd prefer responses directly to my email. PM me if you are interested, and I will get back with you. However, the best thing to do would be to sign up on meetup.com and search for "Houston" and "skeptic" and join that group. It's free, and according to Elaine (who guided me there) a great way to schedule meetings. She was very successful in starting a Houston group.

YAY!

Just for any newbies, I'm reasonably sure GG means the Rajun Cajun on Richmond just inside the loop. There's more than one.

LadyMitris, please try to come! I put 6 p.m. on the meetup.com notice, but several people won't be there until 7. We don't have a formal speaker for this meeting. In past meetings, w'ere stayed until closing time.

Hey, I saw where you signed up. Thanks! I think we will have these on Saturdays in the future, but I'd like input from the group.

I may have to run lab that night, but since it's going to be the first week of school, I don't plan on having any visitors. I also may drag along the wife and kid.

Viper, if you are interested, please sign up on meetup.com (it's free) and google Houston and skeptic. That's where I will always post this and future meetings.

You won't get a lot of email from me!

If not for the BA mention on his blog, I probably would have missed this completely. Despite lurking daily on the JREF forum since (approximately) the beginning of time, I rarely look in this particular sub-fora.

I'm more and more leaning toward telling my Wednesday night students to take a hike next week. The Wife and I saw a sign outside Rajin' Cajun the other day advertising "BBQ Crabs", and our longing for them has been intense. I hope it's not too obvious to anyone that I'm using this social/intellectual gathering as a thin disguise to sate my need for spicy seafood....

You should totally be there. I mean, you will get to meet Marquis de Carabas, and me, and Phil. And Esperdome. And maybe Tricky.

And all the new people who have signed up. And and and

Boudin!

I would post a pic of Hokulele enjoying boudin at a meet-up last summer, but I think she's suffered enough

GG, I'm going to post a reminder on Skepchick in the morning.

Also, I'll most likely be coming straight from work, but if you need me to bring anything, just let me know.

Whatever your powerpoint presentation is, that will be enough.

Oh, and door prizes. But nothing that will scare the newbies.

Just wanted to bump this thread once more in case any Houston area skeptics haven't seen it yet.

GG says there is a good crowd coming, and she's reserved the back room for us.

Hope you can make it.

Good to meet everyone. Had a pretty good time.

Who'd have thought we'd get an actual clairvoyant to show up as well? I feel like we hit the jackpot.

That was too funny. We were all sitting with as straight face as possible, while this guy explained how he worked for the FBI as a clairvoyant. He had predicted JFK's assasination, and 9-11, and numerous events. I didn't talk to him too much, myself.

I really had a great time meeting everyone. I'm looking forward to the next event!

Did the clairvoyant ever explain how he heard about us? Did he just happen to be in the restaurant that night or did he seek us out?

He was somewhat evasive about that, but he mentioned something about contacting the JREF, and apparently someone there informed him of the Houston start up meeting. He did tell me outright that he contacted the JREF because he wants validation for his abilities, but beyond that, the details he offered were a bit sketchy.

He did sign up through the meetup.com site. I recognized his name when he introduced himself. He also left feedback about how much he enjoying meeting openminded people and that he looked forward to future meetings.

My ex suggested we should pat him down for weapons.

George R. Brown Convention Center, General Assembly Theater B
Tuesday., 7 October, 7:00 - 9:00 pm.

Here's the link on more information about the topic and who the speakers will be for this public lecture:
