'Palin: Average isn't good enough' by Sam Harris

Apologies for another Palin thread, it's probably important enough.

Sam Harris' article

Allegedly tattoos are fine as long as you have a tattoo of a Christian Fish. Also, you cannot get the gas line through Alaska unless your 'heart is right with the Lord'. And no matter how hard you try, 'none of it [hard work] is any good' unless you are one with God.

I realize this is a criticism he probably hears often, but one of the problems with people like Dawkins is that they seem to over emphasize symbolic importance. Yes, having a "Creationist wacko" like Palin in office is bad, but her crazy religious beliefs are symptomatic of a person who has not given important questions the thought they deserve (see for example her obscenely ignorant comment on the Pledge). The fact is that if she becomes president she will be a figurehead, and the people actually crafting policy behind the scene are not elected by the American people (they're also probably relatively intelligent and relatively non-religious (see Karl Rove, who is also a relatively ********** up excuse for a human being)).

9 of 10 politicians are probably lying out their ass when they claim they are into their religion.

The Bible is very clear about tattoos, in the same books that forbids homosexuality:

Leviticus 19:28
Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.

It looks like Track is going to hell with the rest of the homos and shellfish eaters. Ah well, hate the sin, love the sinner.

The video is from Dawkins, and it's more of a general comment on that attitude (see for instance the remarks you quoted). In the article proper, Harris does not really attack her religious beliefs.

Cain, understood. Comically enough, Dawkins responds in the comments below the article.

Agreed. This is a private gathering, not a public, accessable event. The last time a private gathering was thrust into the spotlight because of comments on religion, it was bittergate.

Obama ain't exactly an athiest either. She might be outspoken but Obama and religon aren't going to be separated if he wins. For anyone who wants less religion in the White House neither Republicans or Democrats will provide that.

Not so long ago tattoos were a no no for the religious. Just shows the Bible does move with fashion

Obama may not be an antheist but both his parents were. Also his step father was regarded as an "apathetic" moslem by friends in Indonesia. So while he may not be an atheist he loves, respects, & understands at least some of them.

It's well-known that Obama was raised in a secular environment -- I think both of his parents were atheists. A friend of mine read at least one of the Obama books and he would not be at all surprised if the guy is secretly an infidel.

According to Dreams, Obama was an Atheist up to the time of his community work in Chicago. There is then a fairly bizzare chapter in which he goes to Trinity for the first time and sees women shrieking with tears whilst praising Jesus and several people talking in tongues. He never mentions a conversion, but it seems fairly obvious he became a Christian after that point. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a metaphorical Christian, picking and choosing the kind words from the Bible.

I can't really see McCain believing any of it either, but thats simply speculation.
