Congratulations. The first item of business is to secure your machine, now that you have an always on internet connection. You will be happy that you did. What OS are you using?

Welcome to the ranks of the spoiled rotten. The club meets on Thursday nights, and at every meeting we just laugh at all of the stupid people who still have dial-up.

Enjoy it while you can. Pretty soon, Jeff Corey will be along to tell you how much it sucks and/or how you'll get screwed-over by your provider.

3Mbps? DSL???

Surely you jest!
(Or you live IN the switching station)

Seems like getting T1+ speeds from DSL would be pretty unusual.

Whomp!

On cable I get about 2 Mbps (although for a few weeks I had insane downloads at 3 Mpbs).

I've heard of people on cable modems exceeded their providers capped download speed ("stealing bandwith").

Hello???
Seriously?

I can tell you more than you ever even wanted to think existed about modems, if you like.

How's your information theory, fourier theory, and signal processing/linear algebra? Gotta know that so I can take the right approach.

I live within half a mile of the DSLAM. That doesn't necessarily have to be at the switching station, BTW; it's not in my case. Actually, there has been a couple of cases where AnalogX's NetStat Live! has reported max download speeds of over 4mbps (and yes, that's just with the outgoing interface only).

Unusual, but not impossible. Combine how close I am to the DSLAM, with the fact that these are new lines put in, with the fact that the phone wires in my house are all Cat 5, and it can happen.

Wait, do you get 10mbit or does the entire uni get 10mbit? If the latter tell us what your actual share of that is

I'll see all of your w00ts and raise you an omg.

Shared gigabit for the residences at uni. The good part is that there's no cap, so at 2 or 3 in the morning the bottleneck is my 100Megabit cable.

Gotta love the ability to download at 12 megs/sec, despite the annoying lack of servers able to give me that kind of bandwidth.
