Oh, the Irony. . .
In last night’s debate, McCain trumpeted his opposition to Regan sending troops to Lebanon in ’83.
According to factcheck: McCain was quoted as saying: "I do not see any obtainable objectives in Lebanon" and that "the longer we stay there, the harder it will be to leave."

Marines were initially deployed to Lebanon in August 1982. McCain, however, was not elected to the U.S. House until November 1982, more than three months after Marines had already landed. McCain is referring to a 1983 vote to invoke the War Powers Act. That bill, which Ronald Reagan signed into law on October 12, 1983, authorized an 18-month deployment for the Marines. |
