Pro Athletes , Politicians & the News

Why do pro athletes statistics and records have their own section in the news but politicians do not.

I bet if there were half as many fanatics that kept up with the stats of our elected leaders and representatives as there are sports fanatics that keep up with the stats of pro athletes then there would be less corrupt and incompetent behavior from the individuals we elect

Because it sells newspapers.
You will be amazed how many people turn to the Sports section first, except when a REALLY big news even has happened.
I am guilty of that on occasion my self.

Revenue generated newspaper sales are insignificant compared to revenue generated from advertising .

True, but if only a few people are reading a paper how much can said paper charge for advertising?

Show me one newspaper that publishes the statistics of pro athletes.

Top 10 current leaders in each category doesn't count.

Which is quite an abbreviated list, hardly encompassing all pro athletes.

Doesn't the DMS also publish how Texas politicians voted on the big issues? Our local papers do.

So the bar is now raised to ALL pro athletes?

Checking the latest box scores, both Twin Cities papers show me how the Rays and Red Sox players are batting in the ALCS, not just the most recent game. The hockey box scores showed me not only who scored, but how many goals that gives him/them for the season, plus I get the goaltenders' records. During the baseball season, every Sunday they would publish well above and beyond only the top ten statistical leaders. So there you go, unless, again, you are raising the bar.

So your paper publishes the stats of the local teams. Probably takes up 10% of a page in the sports section.

Don't they also publish how your politicians vote on key bills? Don't they cover politics every single day?

And if that's not enough for you, you can always peruse the web site of Congress where you will find the roll call for every bill ever.

And hey, if you guys think you can publish a viable newspaper that features nothing but politics in excruciating detail and make it profitable go for it. Nothing's stopping you.

And I disagree with the OP. Everyone in Chicago knows their politicians are corrupt and yet they keep voting for them anyway, because they think the other guy won't be any better. It's the devil you know.

eta: and at any rate ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? See you after the games.

And other teams and their players, as I have indicated.

I guess I'm not sure what your point is, and maybe I interpreted the complaint in the OP differently from you. I wouldn't mind if other parts of the newspaper, such as politics (if you can call that a "section") borrowed a bit from the style and frequency of the information displayed in the sports pages.

The average schmoe wouldn't know what to do with the stats on politicians, any more than I would know what I was supposed to gain from reading the sports page. (It usually goes straight to the recycle bin so that I don't have it sitting in the way while I read the news and comics.)

Probably, most of the rest of you would understand the sports section as well as I undersatand the politics. I am exceptional in this lot in not making heads or tails of sports, but also among the population at large who are scratching their heads all WTH?
