Magic instruction for kids
My granddaughter is 8 years old and is expressing interest in magic. This is something I'd like to encourage because it seems to me that understanding how people are fooled should help her to be more skeptical as she grows up.
What books or DVDs (or other?) would you recommend for a child of 8 who wants to do magic? |

May I choose "other"?
Get her a few good magic tricks needing little or no slight of hand. Make sure that they all do different things because six different ways to make a coin disappear will be pretty boring to her and her audience. Suggestions Cups and Balls Linking Rings (inexpensive versions are available) Pencil through Bill/Note type Sorry but I don't know where you would buy tricks from. It would be offputting to get a book that suggests using a thumb tip or other and not being able to get the required equiptment. |

Best way for kids to learn magic
I think it's both easier and better to learn magic from other magicians, in person, rather than trying to learn from books and DVD's. The SAM (Society of American Magicians) sponsors SYM (Society of Young Magicians) in many areas. Check with your local SAM chapter to see if there is one near you. Usually they'll meet at least once a month, with several experienced magicians providing the instruction (and often the props) at very low cost (or even entirely free). Give it a try!

Oh, and it can't hurt to take her into a magic shop, if there's one in your area (hurry ... 'brick and mortar' magic shops are dying out ... what a shame). See some tricks demo'ed, meet the magicians on-site, ask about clubs or classes in the area, buy a few tricks that appeal to her ...
