Angry 2012, The Movie - Arrgh!

Oh dear evil Jeebus. I saw this trailer in the theater last night...

I just cannot wait for this movie to give the damned 2012 myth legs. Or could the opposite end up being the case? Would a 2012 movie just make the whole myth seem goofy?

In any case, when the trailer concluded, I and groaned. Thankfully, plenty of people in the theater did likewise.

But with the world economy going in the crapper, and the subsequent rising influence of fundamentalist religion, I fear that more and more people will be primed to buy into the 2012 myth.

Looks like Battlefield Earth has some competition.

I can't wait 'til 2013 comes and I can laugh in the faces of people that thought the world was going to end.

I wonder if Roland Emmerich is one of the dingbats that actually believes this or if he is just trying to cash in on the nonsense.

Oh god I thought the same thing when I came across this trailer online. I just rolled my eyes and realized it would be so much harder to argue with idiots who believe this nonsense. What is worse is that Sony put up a viral site asking people to enter a "lottery" to determine who gets "saved". I wonder how long until this site is presented as proof of some conspiracy.

Though I wonder if the producers really believe? I mean the Day After Tommorow was so over the top I am almost of the opinion that they don't actually believe in global warming. I don't know. I think the movie will do two things. 1.) Make the concept into a joke for most people (which is good). 2.) Make the believers think it was all a "cointelpro" to hide the real truth.

You mean an excuse to substitute corn syrup for sugar in the "classic" version?

This could be serious....

Ha ha, yeah that cracked me up. It's like... "What will the world's leaders do??? Oooooh!!!!"

And I'm thinking... "Well, by now we're all under about a mile of spontaneously appearing water."

Either that or the Pacific Islands just gained themselves a whole bunch of real estate.

There's a business opportunity here: find a true believer and buy his house for pennies on the dollar. He'll have some fun in the remaining few years (he thinks) he has to live, you'll get a good deal.

I always thought that True Believers only lived in mommies basement, and had no assets worth selling.

I seriously don't understand the significance here. OK, so a bunch of Incas or Mayas or whatever had a calendar that ended in 2012 CE.

So?

:shakes head:

Seriously, I'm not trying to come across as arrogant or anything, but I seriously do not get it.

If you hurry up, you can get a good doomsday cult running and get his house for free by promising to rescue his immortal soul.

But don't you see? They're like, Incas, man, or maybe possibly Mayans, who were all primitive 'n ****, and so they obviously had a more profound insight into the ultimate fate of the planet than us "technological" people who only have the benefits of science, and technology.

Why do they make movies that'll look silly in 2013 ? At least 2001 was made in the sixties.

I often ponder why so many people spend so much time trying to figure out when the world will end. So far, out of the countless thousands of doomsday predictions, 100% have been wrong.

Someone will be right - eventually. But you have a far larger chance of dying because you stepped outside your house and go ran over by a truck than dying due to The Apocalypse (TM).

2012 became famous because of the X-Files.

"Ten centuries ago the Mayans were so afraid that their calendar stopped on the exact date that my story begins. December 22, the year 2012. The date of the final alien invasion. Mulder can confirm the date. He saw it at Mount Weather... where our own 'Secret Government' will be hiding when it all comes down."

Hey, I started a thread on this in the General Science section:
http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=129045
Don't steal my Shtick, man!
Between "The Day After Tommorow" "10'000 BC' and now this Roland Emmerich has move from bad science to pure woo.
And he is a crappy filmmaker to boot.
And Emmerich was dissapointed when the major enviormental groups refused to endorse "Day After Tommorow" because the science was so bad.

I would not blame the gov for trying to pull off a "bluebeam" type project just for these people. I mean if they absolutely believe that a planet will be so close to us that the aliens will hop on over and take over, then I can think of nothing more fun than to give them what they are looking for.

I think it's an interesting question to ask, but realistically impossible.
It's kinda like asking what are we gonna do in 7 billion years when the sun dies?

Depending on the reviews I may rent it.

Hey I'm as skeptical as you guys but I don't see a problem making money on fictional disasters. Sure the movie will suck but at least I'll get to see landmarks swallowed up by black holes, flayed by meteors, etc.

Oh, I've got no problem with people making money off disaster flicks - I love disaster flicks. Preferably ones with lots of flesh-eating zombies

What I'm about is the fact that so many people are going to take this seriously because the Newage woo-meisters are going to spin it and use the film for propaganda. But then, as I stated in the OP, perhaps the movie will be so silly and over the top that it'll convince most people that this 2012 nonsense is just that... nonsense.

Regardless, on Dec. 22nd 2012 I'll be laughing my ass off

Asteroids are always popular. The biggest risk that we know of has a chance to hit us in 2880 (8+8=16, 1+6+2=9, 8/8=1, 2*1=11. 911. Coincidence? Just remember not to add the zero.). Generally you want doom to be a little sooner than that otherwise it won't sell too well. Asteroid Apophis will make close approaches in 2029 and 2036. It currently has 0 chance of hitting on the first pass and around 1/43000 chance on the second, so I'm sure we'll hear plenty about how the evil scientists are covering up the public so that the asteroid's government won't know about them. Or something.

I could have sworn SG-1 took care of Apohis - but I could be thinking of some other seemingly endless series.

The point is most disaster films are not feeding mass hysteria like "2012 :"or distoriting important issues like Global Warming like "The Day After Tommorow".
It's called being reponsible.
