Colbert in Iraq

This has got to be the entertainment coup of this century!
He related with the troops immediately, with his pseudo "Basic Training" clips, which are hilarious.. his antics during the mile run.. got everyone going.
They'd all been thru that.
When the President ordered the Area Commanding General to cut Colbert's hair.. and Bush 41 and Clinton and McCain all have cameos..
Stephen has surely enhanced his status in media land!

I loved the haircut scene. The look on Colbert's face was priceless.

They could have trimmed it a bit closer, though.

Have you seen the cover of Newsweek?

He's a "guest editor" for this issue. Lot of funny stuff there.

I love the Bob Hope references with the golf club. This really is in the spirit of those old USO shows.

Whoa - I saw the first show Monday night and they cut it, but not that close. They must have done it again last night or fixed it up between shows. That second photo looks like a proper high and tight. Well done Colbert!

I loved that part. So far, I've also liked the screen appearances of McCain, Clinton, and Bush Sr. as well-- Bush Sr. was the best ("he'd better have some nice legs").

Also funny: "How's your wife?" "I don't know. I have a good friend at home keeping an eye on her... Jodi." "Oh, yeah, great guy."

I'll plead ignorance on that one. Who is "Jodi"? Someone specific or just a name picked at random?

Reference to cadences. Jodi is a mythical figure in many of them.

Others beat me to it. "Jodi" is that "other guy" who moves in on your loved ones back home when you're deployed or otherwise away for duty-related activities.

I actually know one case of a guy who was Jodi-ed by another enlisted service-member. When the wife came to her (then ex-)husband's funeral at a later date, she was smart to not bring Jodi along with her (though some of us hoped she wasn't smart that day).

Message of the day: don't be Jodi. Just don't.

There isn't a living politician that can bust Colbert's chops!
Personally I find his media persona to be distasteful. but my, what a quick mind!
His reference to the generals playing golf at Tampa-stan was a dig at Centcom, which is located in Tampa Fl.
The audience got it!
I can't think of another media mouth that would be as suitable for the USO task he is doing right now.

I've been loving this since Monday night. He's achieving the right balance of snark about the sitation, military in-jokes and just plain goofiness. The man is a genius.

Could you spell it "jody/Jody" because every time I see it spelled like you are I'm reading it as "Jedi".

From what I've heard that wasn't Obama live, but taped. Colbert and the General then acted along as if it was live. So, he may have had a few takes to get it right.

Really? I'd have though the timing would be impossible.

It might explain why Obama was less wooden than he usually is when delivering a scripted joke, but I'm not sure that it's actually feasible.

I'm not 100% sure, but most of the stories I read on Tuesday mentioned a "taped message from President Obama". Such as:
http://blogs.newsobserver.com/tv/bar...shaved-in-iraq

I don't think the timing would be that tough... not for Colbert at least. I'll have to watch again to see how the General reacts to the video Obama.

Poss ... i .. bly.. But I'd have thought that it would not be feasible. And it wasn't just Obama, it was Bush senior, McCain, Clinton ... I just don't see anyone being able to pull that effect off without it being live. It would require great precision and command of the audience.

I might be wrong.

This is Colbert we're talking about. His type of humor may not be everyone's favorite, but he's quick on wit, excellent with timing, and he's a master at handling an audience.

OK, maybe.

OK, yes definitely. I just watched the Obama bit again. Taped.

Still, one of the best things I've seen on TV in a long time.

A lot of preparation has gone into that program!
Just consider the time zones for the cameos.
And getting the principles involved to agree, it's long-term planning.
And very well done!
I'm wondering who tonight's guests will be...

Just part of the culture. Women have long hair, men have short hair. The military acknowledges this (I am aware this is not always the case, but it is the norm).

Unless you're a sheik that wants to join the Army.

I don't think that females are even allowed to shave their heads.

So, just to enforce gender roles, then? All this time, I thought there had to be some pragmatic reason behind it.

Oh, that's great, Dr. A. Just move to the desert in the middle of the US, land of huge Army bases and Area 54, and then insult 5% of the US Army. Hear those truck brakes outside?

So, just to enforce gender roles, then? All this time, I thought there had to be some pragmatic reason behind it.
I think the idea is to allow female servicemembers to retain some semblance of femininity should they desire. There are seperate grooming standards for both men and women, right down to what type of earrings they can wear (6mm silver ball for enlisted - Advancement question!) to their makeup and how their hair must be maintained whilst wearing a cover.

Random boot camp memory:

The Chief RDC in charge of my division didn't say two words the first week of boot camp. Then one night right before lights out he came in and said:

"Nobody loves you. Jody's *********** your woman. I don't like you either."

Then just turned around and left without saying another word.

I hated that guy.

Any other media mouth that attempts to upstage Colbert's Iraq show has to get over a bar waaaaay above most of their meager capabilities!
That week's series is surely worth a Emmy or 4!
W did good last night!

Ah, it seems you're right. Then it was very neatly done.

And credit to the politicians for playing along.

I don't think that females are even allowed to shave their heads.
Take a second look around next time you get to the dfac on a larger post, particularly at the black females. Very few white girls do it, though if they wanted to I doubt anyone whould say anything to them, heh.
