North and South Korea

Randi mentioned the stark differences between North and South Korea in this week's commentary. I just recently came across a picture that symbolizes this difference more dramatically and objectively than any mere words can.

I'll just post a link because it's a huge picture.

For those geographically challenged folks, you can see Japan clearly enough at the far right side of the picture and the Korean peninsula is directly above the westernmost tip of Japan. Here's a rough image of Korea:

If that's not your cup of tea, you can try referring to this jpg which shows the relation of Japan to Korea:

http://go.hrw.com/atlas/norm_htm/japan.htm

The point is that the S. Korean portion of the peninsula is full of lights, whereas the N. Korean portion is almost entirely dark (thus making the S. portion appear to be an island).

Thanks, Luceiia.

I hope you didn't have to draw that map yourself!

Which may be why they want a nuclear power station or two back on line?

Um yeah, I suppose. But maybe we should send them that wonderful game called Sid Meier's Civilization first, so they can try to learn how things really should go in order...first we farm the land, then we create healthy cities, then we invent/build nifty things like sewers, sidewalks, electricity generators, and power grids, then we graduate to nuclear power.

Oh, wait, maybe they just want the nuclear warheads while the masses starve and live in mud huts with no power or sewage (or other basic amenities).

Of course it is not a single photo, but some sort of composite. The whole planet surface would not be visible from one spot, would not all experience night at one time, and be entirely free from cloud cover. Probably if you look around the site you would find a description of how they put it together.

Operating under the Historic Juche principal, the victorious and brave people of the Democratic Republic of Korea, guided by the lodestar of the 21st Century, the great general and philosopher of the People, Kim Jong Il, are continuing to build their army-based policy of popular socialism, to the acclaim and applause of progressive peoples everywhere!

The brave and stead-fast people of Korea will, under the leadership of the incomparable Kim Jong Il, and futhering the glorious traditions of Kim Il Sung -- Father of the Nation -- bare any burden and will certainly defeat the agressive, imperialist agressors of the Korean people -- the United States!

Beware! Our darkness is our disguise and our Victory! From that darkness, the invincible Korean people will rise! Expell and punish all agressors! Triumph over all oppressors! Achieve outstanding, historic victory over the forces of evil! What those who would do harm to the great Korean people see as darkness, is, in fact, brilliance and the light of the great spirit of Chairman Kim Jong Il!
