can't play .AVIs

Media player gives sound but no video.

Tried installing QuickTime and doesn't work at all - says I need some other component but doesn't bother to tell me what.

Ideas? Thx

Download and install VLC, and you should be fine. It will play pretty much anything you throw at it.

Another vote for VLC. Very, very rarely fails to play anything.

VLC is great, and the k-lite codec pack is also good if you prefer to still use WMP or Media Player Classic (which comes with this install).

VLC is great for AVIs. For mkvs and wmvs I still prefer codecs, as there's a hell of a lot of problem with VLC's implimentation of mkv files.

I knew that VLC would be advocated here. The only downside is that it seems to override all my prior sound settings and blast me across to the other side of the room, ears bleeding.

It must be the godsend of every teenager who is desperate to open that porn file but simply can't.

Are you talking about all Avi's or some specific ones? Also, it's possible to make AVI's using different codecs, so your problem most probably is due to missing codecs. To get the most common codecs, you may like to install a "codec-package" such as this:

Codec Guide: K-Lite Codec Pack and other useful stuff

Does porn use obscure encodings? I use it for anime. You wouldn't believe how many fansubbers think it's cute to find the most bizarre, otherworldly encoding scheme and use it for godawful reasons that would baffle Marilyn Von Savant (what's a Theora anyway you [censored] [censored] mother loving [censored]).

Both VLC and MPlayer are pretty ****** players really with mediocre unaccelerated codecs. They are free and will open most things though, so that's a definite bonus.

The big codec packs are generally a bad idea and have a tendency to make your system screwy. There's really only a few codecs one usually needs. XVid for Xvid and DivX video, an H.264 codec (usually for HD video), AC3Filter for AC3 audio, Haali Media Splitter for .MKV files, and the VobSub filter for subtitles. With Win 7, you only need the last three.

If you can't figure out what video format a file is, the GSpot utility is very handy.

I'm surprised no one mentioned VLC, yet. You should try that.

I advise against installing codec packs because they usually include stuff you really don’t need that could possibly mess up your computer. Or worse, they could contain malware (which will almost definitely mess up your computer).

Instead, when you have an AVI that won’t play properly, I recommend you use an app called GSpot to determine what codecs the AVI in question uses, and then just hunt down the individual codecs needed.

This is solid advice if you want to use windows media player, etc.

I still prefer VLC.

Now you tell me. I am cooling on VLC and so installed one for Windows Media player. Still no .FLAC play ability though. Don't get me wrong, thx for all this info, but I haven't found a player I really like as yet.

That's odd, since .FLAC is one of the codecs VLC says it plays.

I've yet to find a media player I like, but VLC comes close. If someone would rewrite the interface of VLC to be a little prettier I would be happy. Something akin to Songbird or Rhythmbox's interface on VLC engine.

Oh, so do I.

It’s great, and is has much better format support than Windows “out of the box”, but it doesn’t play everything.

I know the feeling.

My solution is to use VLC for video and foobar2000 for audio. Works well for me, since I take pride in my music collection and really appreciate having features like a music library and album art display on my audio player but just need my general media player to play video.

A patent free codec based on VP3. Wikipedia uses it.

Other patent free options are dirac (mostly experimental at the moment) and a few odds and ends that don't work.

No, I meant Windows Media Player.

What I dislike about VLC is that the EQ comes up as a separate "box" and doesn't always kick in when you enable it. I don't care about the "prettiness" thing.

Fair issues. There's some online support for these types of problems in their forums, and there's skins that would combine the EQ, I think.

Well, you are wrong. I haven't looked at the source, but putting it next to actual accelerated codecs like those from Cyberlink or Microsoft that will play HD video with ~0 CPU use, it's pretty obvious that it isn't.

Windows Media Player (WMP) will play FLAC just fine, provided you actually have a FLAC codec installed. Chances are that whatever you installed wasn't actually a standard Windows codec (also known as DirectShow filters or Media Foundation transforms). I'm pretty sure the download from the official FLAC site isn't, it's just some tool. Here's an example of a package that includes filters for all the Ogg formats and FLAC: http://www.xiph.org/dshow/

Once you've installed that, you might have to take an additional step to get WMP to recognize the .flac files, but it's not very hard. Just right click on a .flac file and select Open (or Open with if it's already associated with something else), then pick Windows Media Player from the list and make sure the "Always use the selected program..." option is ticked. Hit okay, and WMP should launch and maybe give you this message:

Just tick the "don't ask me again" option and hit Yes. You're now done, and can just double-click .flac-files and they'll automatically open in WMP. You'll also be able to add them to libraries and playlists, if you use that. The same process can be used to make it recognize any other formats you have codecs installed for (like .MKV).

We might be talking about different things... I referred to the codecs being accelerated, i.e. optimized code in asm. You might be referring to the other codecs using hardware decoding, thus using much less CPU than mplayer for ex., that does all decoding in software.

e.g. see this thread

First time I've heard it used to mean "optimized in assembly." I would have thought most people read it as hardware accelerated, which is indeed what I meant.
