Vista: how do I get this magical "elevated status" as admin
I have googled and tried things that are supposed to do this and yet still no go - often I can't even do simple things like rename a freaking folder (and this is after de-selecting the "read only" attribute for it).

This might help.
It also helps to know the names of what you're asking about. I suggest searching on how to turn off "Admin Approval Mode" if it's getting you into such a frustrated state of mind. You could also search for a forced "take ownership" for folders-- there's even a way to add this (or other cool stuff) to your context menu. I'm not trying to be hard on you, but this is a case where I strongly recommend that you learn why you're running into roadblocks instead of trying to force your way to success by rushing up against them. It helps to understand what you're dealing with and what you're looking for, and while things like this seem very different on Vista the underlying concepts are exactly the same as they've been in Windows since the NT days, just with more granularity and specificity. Keeping that in mind will help you find workarounds for some things that get in your way by default. Side note: having Domain Admin privileges tends to trump a lot of the need for the workgroup level workarounds, but I realize that isn't entirely helpful to (most) home users. |
