It was my first 4th of July celebration and I was really disapointed - seemed in these parts, huge amounts of drinking and blowing stuff is the norm

Disappointed? What the hell did you expect, a lovely low-volume tea party where we all sip with our pinkies extended and complain about "the rabble?"
This is America! We drink beer and blow things up. For funsies, mostly. |

Well, the United States, in her generous and giving spirit, has allowed all you foreign types to celebrate or not celebrate our Independence Day as you see fit. However, we are keeping tabs on those who don't celebrate with appropriate enthusiasm. Just a gentle reminder...

Even though the 4th has been largely hijacked by "banal nationalism", the Declaration of Independence is pretty worthy of celebration.

I had to look up banal nationalism. The context is the 4th of July. I don't, day to day, make such displays. My flag avatar usually disapears the week after the 4th.
But let's accept, for arguments sake, that this single incident during a week of rememberence (my week) represents banal nationalism, and I think that argument can be made. What of it? Is love of country and expressing love of country only pernicious, only malignant? I think such banal iconography and actions become problematic when those who dissent are disenfranchised. Who are not accorded a voice. We are social creatures and we evolved to find solidarity and comfort in famliarity. It can and often does breed social cohesion. I don't care for the term "banal nationalism" but I understand it. In any event, I have contempt for black and white thinking that can only find evil in such shared social activities. So long as we also strive for tolerance and acceptance of others we can mitigate such negative aspects. |
