Looking for a London Roomie

Well, my airline tickets are confirmed (I travel on my Sky Miles, but an 8-hour layover in Houston!!!) and my Oyster Card has been ordered, so now I am looking for acommadation and potential roommates.

I plan to be in a Hotel in London from 1-5 October (leave 1:20Pm 6 October) and with the Oyster Card, I can look for hotels several tube stops away (I have my eye on a couple of places near the British Museum that are within walking distance of Tottenham Court, Russell Square, and Goodge Street stations). But willing to listen to other thoughts.

Me, I'm 57, bald, somewhat overweight (for various definitions of some), wear glasses, do not smoke and does not drink to excess. Probably more early to bed and early to rise than most, but I can adjust. According to other roommates, snore like a chainsaw (earplugs optional).

That said, I can cover my half of the room expenses with no problem, and am quite capable of staying on my own dime if I have to.

So, anybody needing a roomie? And any suggestions for Hotels?

I'm considering getting a roommate but not sure yet. I'm waiting to see what kind of benefits I can get from my employer's vacation discount program. I'll know more next week when the benefits become active.

Well if you could get me a ticket to TAM London and pay for my airfare, I would totally be your roommate!

Hutch ...go for near the British Museum. But don't forget the Victoria and Albert. They have THIS....

I love those British Museums!

And don't forget bog man at the British Museum, and they might have a crystal skull or two out....

TAM London: Hotel Suggestions

Hey, where are folks from abroad staying?

Just checked TAM London Page (click the word document on Hotels for details) and rates are so damn high.

So, any suggestions from Londoners or frequent London visitors on a 40-60 pound range?

Looks like the Hyde Park is not that far away from the conference venue, is that location an impossible dream for that money?

Suggestions, please.

You might want to look into a Bed and Breakfast, if you are looking for cheap accomdations.
London is notorious for being a very expensive city to stay in.

Or do what I did before I last visited London -- a lot of Googling!

There all sorts of bargains, discounts and deals but you have to search for them.

I ended booking through a USA site and (some what to my surprise) there was a room waiting for me when I arrived at the price advertised.

Bonne chance!

I'm here, but I booked ages ago when they were having a 19UKP per night sale. They may make more cheap rooms available so it's worth checking back on their website.

Arrgh! This was about 5 years ago and the information may be on a backup somewhere but it's probably irrelevant by now.

Recently I've been using expedia.ca as the site to start with (the Canadian version of expedia.com and expedia.uk). A quick search there for a week in September gets me rates from $87 to $700+CDN per night. The $87 rate is a special for the Hampstead Britannia Hotel. (#48.60 GBP)

Give me an hour and I could do better.

There used to be a site in London where you could pick the location and dates you wanted in London and they would sell you a room for a minimal amount. The would e-mail the actual hotel a week before you were to arrive. I haven't searched for it recently.

Thanks for the tip. Rates are 85 pounds/night (hotel website), I'm suspecting I'll need to raise my upper limit to 90-100 .

Anyway, I'm still on a state of confusion, so many offers....

When we visited London on school trips, we always stayed at the Royal National Hotel. Ugly as hell, but really conveniently located just off Russell Square and convenient for Holborn and the West End.

But the hotel 666 is staying in is much more convenient for the conference, and also closer to the delights of Borough Market, Shakespeare's Globe and the Tate Modern.

I just came back from visiting London...I stayed at the London Kensington Forum Hotel. (owned by Holiday Inn)

I liked it. It's a <5 minute walk to the Gloucester Tube, decent breakfast included, Starbucks across the street if you're into that. It's a short walk to the Victoria Albert, History Museum, and Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park.

Room was a bit small. They charge 15 pounds/night for internet, but I found another WiFi signal for 10 pounds for the entire week, so I bought that and it worked great.

I would love to go to TAM London. Great line up, beautiful city.

Make sure that you explore hotels along transport links. You may find somewhere near a station on the Blackfriars line (the mainline station is still open)

Use the tfl journey planner to check travel times.

I booked some travelodge rooms a few months back at Aldgate (before I knew exactly where it was going to be) and they may still have some rooms available at not too pricey rates.

I've found the google maps search tool to be very useful for finding good accomodation in London.

Thanks, I already have a good candidate I may be booking in the following days. It's 1 block from Paddington Station and 3 blocks from Hyde Park. It doesn't seem to be a very long ride to the conference venue (St Paul's station?) on the Tube.

US$ 95 sounds like a good price, I know rooms are small and there may be a stain or two in the carpet, but that's no harm. I'm on a budget and all I need is a room to give the skeleton some rest at night.

Hotels.com + Google Earth together do a good job on hotel search in London.

Try Premier Inn. They're a step up from the Travelodge, and have a £29 sale on at present.

Thanks for the tip. I checked the site, it's a good deal, but not applicable to London hotels.

They have rooms at Kew and Enfield at this price if you don't mind being away from the city centre.

Thanks, but I'm still getting rates of £60+ on those two

Anyway, just for the record, I booked at the Ascot for US$112, tax included (+ free internet WiFi + Continental breakfast).

I have some thoughts on the matter, but I just got home from the pub. I'll weigh in over the next couple of days!

Needless to say, there are hundreds of choices. I have a favorite place I always stay, but I'm awaiting their return email on availability.

Here's a useful site. Select a London postcode, and it will highlight the areas on a sliding scale that are within a certain travelling time on public transport. I don't think that the house price and scenicness index mean much for finding hotels, but it might highlight cheaper areas to look for hotels:

http://mapumental.channel4.com/postcode/EC4V3DB

Unfortunately you need to sign up (I think that to build the reference data for you postcode takes a while, so they're restricting usage) If you are having problems, let me know, and I can email you a .png with the map on :-)

Another useful map is the London connections map. This is more extensive than the Tube map, and shows additional Rail lines that aren't part of the underground system. You can see that there are a fair few BR lines that terminate at Blackfriars (the mainline station is still open)

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloa...-zones-map.pdf

For those looking to travel in on the district and circle lines, Mansion house is the closest tube station, and it's a 4-5 minute walk from Blackfriars.

LateRooms.co.uk and LastMinute.com are both rather excellent for finding deals.

Just make sure to stay someplace haunted and report back here with any "strange experiences."

Oh and don't forget to ask for the room with the most paranormal activity.
