What REALLY Sucks About Being In The U.S. Military...

...is that the troops who captured Saddam Hussein don't get the $25 million reward.

Yeah. Back in the good-ol' days, being in the army mostly meant that you hoped to live long enough to get the good stuff when the looting began.

I was just thinking that yesterday.

Yup, I still hold firm that a conquering army should be entitled to the spoils of war.

If the fallen foe doesn't like 'dem apples', then they shouldn't have lost.

God, the earlier poster (different thread) is right; the Arabian armies fold like the French. Sure, they talk a bigger game, and they SOUND like they mean business, but Jesus! I often wonder if even the FRENCH could beat them.

Hey Frogs! Here is your chance! Go kick some Arab butt to boost your combat record a bit. Last I checked, it needed some padding!

(kidding, kidding)

I have a friend who works for UNICEF. She's spent most of the last 10 years in central/ west Africa disarming child soldiers, reuninting families etc, and has had to be evacuated a number of times. She considers herself an authority on the subject as she has been rescued by the Foreign Legion (Brazaville) SAS/ Paras (Freetown) and someone else she didn't recognise (eastern Zaire). The only time she came in contact with US forces (Marines, Brazaville) she, and the assorted aid workers/ journos she was with decided to sit tight and wait for the Legion. OK, the Legion is after all officially Foreign but most of them are in fact French.

The looting was not of one's own treasury, however.

The 25 mil was to come from our coffers. Not Hussein's.

No one in the legion is French. if they are, then they have to change thier status to a non-french nationality. Most of them do not even fit into this catagory. most of them are either Algerian, European (non-French), or american.

Considering the kinds of people the Legion enlists (and I'll never say the Legion is a bad thing. they are a proud core, and I hold them in regard- just making a point), your friend was foolish.

Kidding or not, remember Algeria. They didn't exactly shine during that little episode.
